Amy & Erin Malwin

  • Michigan City

As twins, Amy and Erin Malwin spent a lifetime doing things together.

When it was time for them to decide where to attend college, it was natural for them to go to the same school and they chose Purdue University North Central.

“PNC was a good match for us,” the sisters agreed.

Amy and Erin started school together, shared a major, shared books and took many of the same classes. In December, 2008, they both earned their Bachelor's degrees in Liberal Studies.

They grew up hearing about Purdue North Central – their aunt is a PNC alumna, and her good friend, Beth Rudnick is a PNC academic advisor.

They credit Rudnick with helping them throughout their time at PNC. “She always helped us - we couldn't have done it alone. It was nice to know that we could go to her with any problems,” they said.

The sisters each accumulated a number of academic honors and their names regularly appeared on the semester honors lists. Their secret to success was simple, “We took classes that we thought we would like. If you enjoy your classes, more than likely you will do better in them.”

Being twins presented some interesting situations from time to time.

“A lot of people confuse us,” said Erin. “Sometimes teachers did not know that there are two of us! They'd start talking to one of us and when we have a puzzled look, they'd realize it was not who they thought it was. We would be on campus on separate days too, so a lot of people think that it's just the same person.”

What did they enjoy most about PNC?  “Meeting new people. We gained some good friends here,” said Amy. “Since most people were from the area, we made new friends, but we also made connections within the region that may help us when we graduate. It was a great experience and we are both glad we stayed home and went to PNC.”

Erin and Amy are former high school swim team members who enjoy water sports, especially swimming and jet-skiing in Lake Michigan during the summer.

At PNC, their biggest challenge came in balancing all of their commitments for work, school and family.

“A lot of times we would be up late doing homework and then have to get up the next morning, which I'm sure a lot of people going to PNC can relate to.  It was hard to motivate yourself sometimes, but you do it,” said Erin.

“We want to tell people that PNC can give you the same opportunities as a larger campus,” the sisters agreed. “The school does have sports, clubs and a lot of other activities.”
