History
Student Support Services was established in 1984 to address low college attendance among first generation college students, low income, and students with documented disabilities at Purdue North Central. Funded by the Higher Education Act of 1965, and supported by the university’s strong commitment of additional resources and services, Student Support Services provides services to 195 students each year. Purdue North Central’s Student Support Services program is one of 963 programs serving 204,534 students across the country with funds distributed through competitive grants.
Mission
Student Support Services is committed to providing learning, discovery and engagement opportunities through quality academic, career and personal support services to low income, first generation college students and students with disabilities.
Services
Student Support Services is specially designed to provide academic and social support services for our program participants. This support is provided through the undergraduate years and is intended to lead to successful completion of the university curriculum leading to a bachelor’s degree.
We provide various academic and social services to 195 participants annually. Services include, but are not limited to, counseling, mentoring, and tutoring. Participants are required to meet with a staff member on a regular basis during the first semester they are in the program.
Student Support Services also offers assistance with career decisions and preparation. Participants unsure as to what they want to study can receive career counseling. A resume writing workshop is offered to help students prepare for their job search and possible interviews.
We also provide participants with opportunities to attend student leadership conferences and cultural events, such as plays, concerts, and museums. Student Support Services also schedules educational excursions to cities like Chicago and Washington D.C.
