An Equal Opportunity
Introduction
Purdue University North Central is committed to
providing equal educational opportunities to
qualified students with disabilities by complying
with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
This handbook has been prepared as a review of
various disabilities that affect learning in the
University setting and suggests possible
accommodations for these students. Students with
disabilities will vary in each category, thus this
should only be a guide and each student’s
instruction should be individualized.
Per the Americans with Disabilities
Act of 1990, a person with a disability will be
defined as one who:
(1)
has a physical or mental impairment
that substantially limits one or more major life
activities;
(2)
has record of such impairment; or
(3)
is regarded as having an impairment.
Major life activities include: caring
for oneself, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking,
learning and working.
A qualified student with a disability
is one who meets the academic and technical
standards of the University.
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
of 1973 states in part:
No otherwise qualified individual
with a disability shall, solely by reason of her or
his disability, be excluded from the participation
in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to
discrimination under any program or activity
receiving Federal financial assistance.
In order to comply with this statute,
the University must assure that the same equal
educational opportunities are available to students
with disabilities that are available to other
students.
Students with
disabilities must request accommodations and must
provide current documentation to the Disability Services
Coordinator. This documentation must be completed by a
qualified professional (physician, psychologist,
psychiatrist, etc.)
Questions
regarding this policy may be directed to the Vice
Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Equal
Opportunity/Affirmative Action Officer who also serves
as the 504/ADA Compliance Officer or the Disability
Services Coordinator.
