FAFSA Filing Information

Deadline is March 10, 2010

You must complete and submit the FAFSA to apply for federal and state student aid for college. In order to apply, you will need to do the FAFSA electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov. PNC federal school code is – 001826.

1.  Get a federal student aid PIN – The PIN allows you to sign your FAFSA electronically. The PIN is also used to access and correct your processed FAFSA information later. Apply for your PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. If you are required to provide parent information (the FAFSA will determine this), one of your parents must also sign the application. That parent would have to apply for their own PIN also.

2.  Information required to apply

A.  Social Security number for both student and parents (if you are required to provide parent data)

B.  Driver's license number if you have one.

C.  Your alien registration number if you are not a U.S citizen

D.  Federal tax information or tax returns, including W-2 information, for yourself and parents (if providing parent information), or for your spouse if you are married. NOTE: Please be aware that if you are filing for the 2009-2010 school year you will use your 2008 tax data and information. For 2010-2011 you use 2009 tax data.

E.  Records of untaxed income, such as Social Security benefits, Temporary Assistance for Needy families (TANF), veteran's benefits for student and parents, and information on savings, investments, and business and farm assets for yourself and parents, or yourself and spouse if married.

3. Be aware of deadlines – The filing deadline for the state of Indiana for the 2010-2011 year is March 10, 2010.

4.  Follow up on your FAFSA – Your application will be processed and you can access your SAR (student aid report) online. You should review your SAR for any necessary corrections or updates. Your school will be able to access your data 3-5 business days after you submit the FAFSA. Please also be aware that each school has its own processing schedule, and receipt of your FAFSA data may take longer. You can also check the status of your FAFSA by going to www.fafsa.ed.gov and select “Check the Status of a Submitted FAFSA”, or call 1-800-4-FED-AID.
