MATHEMATICS 213 online - SPRING 2013

FINITE MATHEMATICS I 

office hours and class schedule  deadlines

 

  • PREPARATION

    • Are you really ready?  I very strongly recommend you read this carefully before doing anything else!

    • Watch getting started online video:

    • Make sure you are registered in this course. 

    • Buy texts: Finite mathematics: an applied approach (3rd Edition, bundled with MathXL) and students solution manual.

      • Required texts can be bought from PNC bookstore (1-219-785-5247).

      • To repeat: text must be bundled with online package MathXL

    • Print MA 213D syllabus 

    • Logon to your Blackboard Learn account by the first day of classes.

    • Register into MathXL (you need both a Course ID from me and a Student Access Code from text)

      • You are allowed to use MathXL free for TWO WEEKS before paying

      • provide email address you want me to use when registering in MathXL

    • You will be blocked from starting any MathXL assignments until you: 

      • send me a telephone number that gets through to you 

      • send me an email address you really use

      • set up a skype contact with me (may never use skype but screen-share feature very useful if you need my help)

      • book quiz 4 and final exam times for online supervision (webcam and microphone are required)

      (It is important to keep up.  Please contact me if you are falling behind.  I will make a point of contacting students who miss assignments or have a D/F.)

    • Buy A TI-84 Calculator and check out tutorial videos for TI-84+ Calculator 

    • Check out frequently asked questions for online students.

    • Check previous course material.

  • WEEK 1.

    Chapter 1. Applications of Linear Functions

    • Submit answers online to homework 1 questions. 

      • due on or before Tuesday (not Thursday!) of deadlines.

      • homework 1 assignment available and submitted in  MathXL.

      • you must achieve at least 80% on homework 1 before moving onto untimed test 1.  Take advantage of extensive online help given with all questions in homework 1.

      • all questions in online homework 1 are found in Finite mathematics: an applied approach  text.

    • untimed test 1 assignment available and submitted in MathXL.  

      • due on or before Thursday (not Friday!) of deadlines.

      • untimed test 1 assignment available and submitted using MathXL.

      • once in MathXL, click on show all to see both homework 1 and untimed test 1.

      • Untimed test 1 will not be accepted unless you have achieved at least 80% on homework 1.

      • do not use Blackboard email to send me either of your assignments

      • submit as many times as you want before deadline, receive highest score of all submissions.

      • untimed test scores available in Blackboard Friday of deadlines. 

      • use ID number I emailed you to identify your current total score and grade.

    • class lecture notes 1 optional, for your information, not handed in

    • TI84-lab1 document gives list of all TI-84+ instructions used this week.  It is for your information; it is not handed in.

  • WEEK 2.

    Chapter 2.  Systems of Linear Equations

    • homework 2 online questions due on or before Tuesday of deadlines

    • do quiz 1 online in MathXL on or before midnight Thursday deadlines.

      • one 20 minute timed submission is allowed; each student does quiz by themselves with no help from others.

      • quiz 1 scores available in Blackboard after 9 pm late Friday night. 

      • use ID number to locate your current total score and grade.

    • class lecture notes 2 not handed in

    • TI84-lab2 not handed in.
