Fragments

 

Fragments----

                                                            …are incomplete sentences.

 

Misplaced Periods --- Usually, fragments are pieces of sentences that have been disconnected from the main clause.  The way to correct them is to remove the period between the fragment and the main clause.

 

Wrong:    Purdue offers many majors in engineering.  Such as electrical, chemical, and industrial engeineering.

 

Right:        Purdue offers many majors in engineering, such as electrical, chemical, and industrial engineering.

 

Wrong:    Coach Deetz exemplified this behavior by walking off the field in the middle of a game.  Leaving her team at a time when we needed her.

 

Right:      Coach Deetz exemplified this behavior by walking off the field in the middle of a game, leaving her team at a time when we needed her.                 

 

Wrong:    I need to find a new roommate.  Because the one I have now isn’t working out too well.  

 

Right:      I need to find a new roommate because the one I have now isn’t working out too well.

 

            Clue:  Most (but not all) of these fragments occur after the main clause. 

 

True Fragments--- Some fragments are pieces of sentences because they lack a subject or main verb.

 

No verb:  A story with deep thoughts and emotions.

 

            Toys of all kinds thrown everywhere.

 

No subject:   With the ultimate effect of all advertising is to sell the product.
