What Can DISCOVER Do for You?

DISCOVER Online is a career exploration program. This program is available for use by students through any computer with an Internet connection.  Use of the DISCOVER Career Planning Program is strongly recommended for all students. Whether you have declared a major and career path and are an upperclassman, or you are just beginning as a freshman and undecided about your major and future career, your use of DISCOVER will be very helpful.

DISCOVER is based on a personal inventory evaluation of your interests, abilities, and values. The results of these inventories will generate a list of occupations, as well as majors, that are a good match for you.

The program provides easy access to coordinated, comprehensive, information about occupations both civilian and military, majors, schools scholarships and financial aid, and job-seeking tools. The system offers complete, current databases of occupations, college majors, schools and training institutions, and military occupations.

Learn how to develop effective resumes, cover letters, job applications, and interviewing skills. Inventory results are displayed on a World of Work Map.  An individual’s results are marked on the Map by colored rectangles (yellow for Interests, pink for Abilities, and blue for Values).  Users can click on a letter to see a list of occupations within that Career Area.

The World of Work Map also has videos to illustrate its six career clusters and 26 career areas.  These videos help users understand the parts of the World of Work Map and what they mean. Occupation Videos have also been incorporated into Discover to offer users and audio/visual view of approximately 4oo of the 555 total occupations listed.

For all occupations, the Related Occupations section now contains more information about specialties within the field.  This additional information about specialty occupations helps users think more creatively about how to combine their interests and skills, and helps them find less common occupations that may interest them.

For all occupation’s, salary information has been revised and updated in 2010 from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The 448 majors have been revised and schools have verified their web addresses as of May 2011.  There are 3683 Career/Tec. Schools listed, 2580 t\Two Year Colleges, 2444 4 Year Colleges, 1816 Graduate Schools, and 479 Schools with Distance Degree Programs.

In the Job Search section, under Interviews, there is a feature called “Sample Interviews.”   These videos include 8 people who are applying for different types of jobs.  Users who are facing a job search should find these helpful.

Job Search, Internships, Military6 Information, and all other information has been updated as of June 2011.

This FREE program is offered through the Dean of Students' Office. A USER ID# is required to gain access to the program.
