Announcement: Change in Offering of Nursing Degree Programs
Purdue North Central (PNC) currently has two degree programs in the Department of Nursing and both programs are fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC): an Associate of Science (AS) in nursing and a Bachelor of Science (BS) in nursing.
The Indiana Commission for Higher Education (ICHE) has requested that PNC initiate a change in nursing degree programs, with a gradual decrease in enrollment to the AS in nursing program and, at the same time, a gradual increase in enrollment to the BS in nursing program. The PNC Department of Nursing, in compliance with the request of the ICHE, announces that the AS nursing program will accept final applications for enrollment in the AS nursing program through August 16, 2010. (Applicants for the Spring 2011 semester will have five consecutive semesters to complete the AS nursing program by Spring semester 2013.)
This change enables PNC to focus on educating nurses at the baccalaureate level. According to The American Association of Colleges of Nursing,
- The Bachelor of Science degree in nursing is the critical first step for a career in professional nursing. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and other leading nursing organizations recognize the BSN degree as the minimum educational requirement for professional nursing practice. While graduates can begin practice as an RN with an associate degree or hospital diploma, the BSN degree is essential for nurses seeking to perform at the case-manager or supervisory level or move across employment settings.
- The BSN nurse is preferred -- More nurse executives are indicating their desire for the majority of their hospital staff nurses to be prepared at the baccalaureate level to meet the more complex demands of today's patient care. In fact, the words "BSN preferred" are appearing more frequently in classified ads for registered nurses nationwide.
Student Nurses begin their nursing education in the
Nursing Resource Center where they learn basic nursing principles and procedures through classes and practice. Next door to the Nursing Resource Center is a Media Lab where students can use specialty software for nursing studies.
