Having McAfee anti-virus protection at home doesn't do you much good if you don't regularly update your virus definition (.Dat) files. The latest .Dat files will provide you with protection from the most recent virus threats. If you have an always on connection (such as a cable modem), please follow the steps in paragraph A below. If you have a Dial-Up Connection, please follow the steps in paragraph B below.
A. Always on Connections
Following these steps will set up McAfee to automatically download the latest virus definitions.
- Go to START | PROGRAMS | NETWORK ASSOCIATES | VIRUSSCAN CONSOLE
- Double click on AutoUpdate
- Click on the Schedule tab
- Select Enable
- In the Run section, select how often you want it to run.
- In the Start at section, select the time and day(s) you want it to run.
- Select Apply and then OK.
B. Dial-up connections
If you have a dial-up connection, you will need to follow these manual steps frequently - your .Dat files will be updated each time you follow these steps. We recommend that you do this at least weekly.
- Make sure that you are connected to the Internet
- Go to START | PROGRAMS | NETWORK ASSOCIATES | VIRUSSCAN CONSOLE
- Double click on AutoUpdate
- Click on the Run Now button to start updating the DAT files
