Dr. David Feikes is an associate professor of mathematics at Purdue Univeristy North Central. He specializes in the mathematics education of children. He is project director for Connecting Mathematics for Elementary Teachers (CMET) a project which developed a commercially published textbook and supporting material for prospective elementary teachers and their instructors which describe how children learn and think about mathematics in grades K-6. These materials are designed to be used in mathematics content courses to help preservice teachers connect the mathematics they are learning with the mathematics they will be teaching children. He is also the developer and project director of Purdue Math, problem solving activities which are used in local elementary schools.
Coming to Know Number |
This session will describe how children come to know and understand the concept of number. Examples from the Connecting Mathematics for Elementary Teachers (CMET) Project will be used. Participants will engage in an activity designed to help children develop the concept of numbers.
