Journey 1

Journey # 1: Who am I?

The first part of your Journey involves defining who you are and what you want to do. You are encouraged to complete a Self Assessment which aligns your values, interests & preferences with job families. You will also be able to conduct research on academic majors and the types of employment opportunities that may be obtained and examine occupational projections of in-demand jobs for the 21st Century.

Want a little more information?

Download one of WetFeet's Insider Guides (located under the "Guides" section). The guides are designed to help you out on a variety of career related topics, such as industries, resumes, interviewing or companies. Research employers (in the "Employers" section) that you know hire professionals in your field of interest.

Do a Google search using key words listed in the occupational research you performed on Sigi3 and What Can I Do With This Major. Try searching out occupations, to get a better idea of what industries hire the professionals that interest you. Did any Linkedin.com public profiles show up during your Google search? Try to focus on any job listings that come up during your search, this will help you understand what the minimum qualifications are required for someone working in your field of interest.

On your Google/WetFeet search, consider the following:

  • What are the entry level qualifications for your position of interest?
  • What are the education requirements for your position of interest?
  • Does the position require someone to obtain certifications, a professional degree, a license, and additional studies beyond a bachelor’s degree?
  • How much direct experience does the employer require?
  • What special skills are employers seeking?

Of the Linkedin.com public profiles that came up in your Google Search, consider the following:

  • What are names of employers that hire people in your area of interest? Are they local or geographically designated to one area?
  • What types of benefits are offered by employers to these types of positions?
  • What is the typical hiring process of the employers that hire professionals in your position of interest?
  • Do any of the companies offer internships or seasonal employment opportunities?
  • Is there anything that is changing about the employers business or industry?
  • Is there anything that is changing about the employment opportunities in your field of interest?
