On the tenth day of wellness...you knew this was coming, but try to walk 10,000 steps on this day. If you already do this much, try adding 1,000 more steps. If this number is too high for various reasons try to walk one half of the recommended 10, 000 steps today. Walking 10,000 steps a day has been shown to be a good step towards increasing physical fitness and decrease risk for heart disease and diabetes.
10,000 steps may seem like a lot of walking, but many of you may already be walking this far each day. However try to take the long way around and get in some extra steps within your regular daily activities at home, at work and while doing errands. If possible during this busy holiday season, take a break and consider a brisk walk with your family, friends, or your dog…or all of the above! Don't forget those days of shopping when your walking all over the place...that counts too!
Activity for Today: The weather outside today may or may not limit your outdoor activity a bit, but try and take a walk during your break, or try taking a longer route while conducting your business today at work. You may even think about going to the mall and walking there, whichever path you take remember the goal today is to reach 10,000 steps. Here is the walking distances in the campus buildings at PNC.
Mark on your Calendar: How many steps you took today. If you don't have a step counter, don't worry just write down the what you think you walked either in steps, miles, or time. If you walk 1 mile that equals approximately 2,000 steps. Most people achieve 10,000 steps by one or more sustained walks or runs, equivalent to 30-60 minutes or more of walking per day.
p.s. Need a pedometer? You may pick up one at HR. Just stop on by and see Kendra.
