The United States Department of Agriculture's MyPlate encourages everyone to fill half their plate with fruits and vegetables.
People who eat more fruits and vegetables as part of an overall healthy diet are likely to have reduced risk of some chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and some types of cancer. Fruits and vegetables provide nutrients vital for health and maintenance of your body.
The amount you should be eating depends on your age, sex, and level of physical activity. Recommended daily amounts are shown in the fruit chart and vegetable chart.
The above information can be found at: http://www.choosemyplate.gov
Activity for Today: Go to www.fruitsand veggiesmatters.org to see what fruit and vegetables are currently in season. Note: When fruits and vegetables are in season that is when you get maximum flavor at a lower cost!
Mark on your Calendar: List 3 fruits or vegetables that are in season right now and a nutritional benefit they provide. (i.e. minerals, vitamins, etc).
