Junior Achievement of Chicago/NW Indiana is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to educating and inspiring young people to succeed in a global economy. Since its’ charter in 1940, Junior Achievement has promoted economic education to more than 2 million students in greater Chicagoland and NW Indiana. JA helps to bring the business world to life in the classroom while teaching important skills to help kids be successful in life! All of JA’s programs focus on financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship. Students who participate in JA learn the economics of life, how to create opportunities to achieve their goals and realize the importance of their education. JA’s programs are designed for grades K-12. Through age appropriate curriculum, JA’s programs at the elementary level teach children how they can impact the world around them as individuals, workers and consumers. JA’s programs continue through middle and high school grades, preparing students for additional key economic and workforce issues they will face in the future. Volunteers in the community, like college students, inspire and educate kids through educational enrichment activities. The kids that participate in JA’s programs have a higher level of self confidence as they learn how the business world works. They see the connection between education and success and have higher aspirations than those who have not had the JA experience. Many students also seek degrees in business after graduating high school.

Service Learning Opportunity Description:

Junior Achievement can apply to many academic areas of interest. By volunteering with JA, students can acquire a variety of skills that can benefit them both professionally and personally Junior Achievement is in over 80 schools in Lake and Porter counties and in over 1200 classrooms. JA has a variety of programs for ages k-12 and can target area schools based on your classroom needs and goals. JA has volunteers present our curriculum in the form of Traditional Delivery or JA in a Day.
JA can be applied to majors such as, Education, Business/Economics, Speech/Communications, etc. As an Education Major, volunteering for JA can help students perfect their teaching and communication skills, help them determine and age level they would want to specialize teaching in, market themselves to different schools and school districts. For Business Majors, students can apply the principles of business and economics to their classroom teaching experience; perfect their communication skills, make contacts in the business world through JA’s extensive corporate network, and excite students about Business Degrees. For Communication majors students can fine tune their communication skills by teaching, develop organizational techniques and learn important skills for public speaking. JA could also have a service opportunity where students can run and organize an event and campaign.
In essence, any students volunteering for JA will gain a life changing experience for themselves and it’s an opportunity to make a lasting impression with our youth and gain a sense of responsibility for our future generation. Also, volunteering for JA allows students to act as college spokespeople and representatives, develop closer ties with local community leaders and organizations, and enable them to be role models to inspire students to value education and pursue a college degree.

Service Learning Opportunity Description: N/A

Community Service Opportunity: N/A

Volunteer Opportunity:

Community Workshop Program Assistant: PCACS hosts several monthly Community Workshops educating the community on topics that are related to senior issues (e.g. heart attack prevention) and/or poverty issues (e.g. How to Rebuild Your Credit). It would be great to have a student looking for event planning experience to help with introducing speakers, indentifying potential speakers/topics, creating flyers for the workshops, etc.
Website Research: We need someone to analyze our website in terms of its user friendliness, our ability to make changes to it, and our alternatives. This student would look at the website software we currently use and give us a recommendation on whether or not we should continue using it. If the recommendation is to stop using it, then we would like a summary of our alternative software options. If the recommendation is to continue using the current website software, then we would like some advice on how to work with it so that it meet our needs and/or recommendations on how to change the look and content of our existing website.
Customer Service Research for our Transportation Service: PCACS offers a door to door (also called demand response) transportation service to seniors and the disabled through our 6 buses and 2 mini vans. It would be great to have a student studying marketing and/or customer service to do ride alongs on each bus to examine our strengths and weaknesses when it comes to how we service our transportation clients. They could also do a survey of these clients (create the survey with our assistance, distribute it, and analyze the results/feedback).

Reins of Life
Address: 9375 W. 300 N.
City, State Zip: Michigan City, IN 46360
Website: www.ReinsofLife.org
Phone Number: 574-232-0853
Contact Person: Sharon Burnside
Email: SKB315@netzero.net

Brief Agency Mission:

“To improve the quality of life for children and adults with
 disabilities through therapeutic horseback riding.”

Service Learning Opportunity:

Bridge Construction: Design and build a bridge over a branch of Trail Creek that runs through Reins of Life property at 9375 W. 300 N., Michigan City. The bridge was washed out last year when the heavy rains swelled the creek making access to the northwestern acreage impossible. The bridge design will have to fit the non-profit budgetary limitations.
Trail Creek Clean Up: The branch of Trail Creek that runs through the Reins of Life property is becoming overgrown with trees, plant life and debris. Salmon spawn in the creek. It needs to be cleaned out so the creek can flow and the salmon can spawn.
Pond Mainternance: Reins of Life has a pond on its property at 9375 W. 300 N, Michigan City. An outside pond service is currently maintaining it. The need is for an ecologically-sound way to maintain the pond without damaging the environment. It is situated near a branch of Trail Creek. Reins does not want chemicals that will drain into the Creek and that is economical to maintain.
Marketing Fundraiser: Reins of Life conducts a fundraiser called Reins of Life Day. It is a dress down day for schools and businesses. Participants pay $2 and in return get coupons that can be redeemed in the community. This fundraiser has been successful in the South Bend/St. Joseph County area for 13 years. It was held in Michigan City/La Porte County last year, but it was not widely marketed or correctly marketed. Help is needed with marketing this event.
Strategic Planning: Reins of Life has been providing therapeutic horseback riding for people with disabilities in the St. Joseph County and surrounding area for 31 years. In 2007 an equestrian center was donated to Reins to start therapeutic horseback riding in the La Porte County area. A strategic plan has never been written for the Michigan City program. Much headway has been made with adapting the facility to accommodate people with disabilities, marketing our program to schools and reaching out to the community. However, developing a strategic plan is imperative for the success of this satellite program.
Website: Reins of Life has a website that is currently undergoing redesign. However, the site is not artistically innovative. More importantly, Reins personnel and/or volunteers cannot update the material in-house. The need is for a more creative site, one that can be maintained in-house by staff.

Community Service Opportunity:

Sidewalkers or horseleader for classes for people with disabilities. Requires commitment for once a week (minimum) for riding session of 8 weeks. Horse feeder-Feed horses one time a day/1 day a week. Maintenance/grass cotting-flexible-as needed

Email: Amanda@riverbendmath.org

Brief Agency Mission:

Our mission is to promote interest and confidence in mathematics among people of all ages. With technology-related fields becoming increasingly important to our economy, people need more opportunities to learn that math can be fascinating and that it can lead to rewarding careers. Our organization provides several different types of programs including math tutoring, family math activities, math circles, teacher workshops, and custom events with hands-on activities.

Service Learning Opportunity:
Each Sunday the Math Center holds a series of programs. The project would be to assist in the planning and execution of these programs. Volunteers would be expected to participate in the events each Sunday and additionally spend more time (1 to 3 hours) preparing content and activities for the week’s program.

  • Math and Technology Academy-Students of all ages drop by for math tutoring, try hands-on-activities, or work on an independent project. This program serves both students who need extra supports and students who love math and want to learn more.
  • Family Math- Activities designed to allow elementary school students and their families to enjoy a fun math activity together. Each Family Math topic is self-contained and lasts 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Community Research Project- An extended investigation which lasts for an entire semester. Students form and test conjectures, propose and investigate side questions, and collectively write up results and findings for publication on the Math Center webpage or in a journal.

The Riverbend Community Math Center produces math activities for use by the Math Center, teachers, and the general public. Our goal is to produce a database of documents and instructions from small self-contained activities to large and open-ended projects. Our needs are for service learning participants to create directions and lesson plans for use by individuals, groups, and teachers. Our ultimate goal is to provide multiple versions of each activity as appropriate for each of these targets.

  • Activity Directions- Fun and pretty guides and worksheets used by students to investigate the topic.
  • Leader Directions- Guides for parents or group leaders which includes materials lists, planning and activity time estimates, and activity goals. May include a more detailed activity walk-through with hints and suggestions. Leader directions also point out key steps and concepts and discuss possible tangent investigations.

  • Lesson Plans- More formal documents which in addition to all parts of the leader directions also identify corresponding state and national education standards met by the activity. Lesson plans may also include an educational analysis of the activity and Blooms Taxonomy breakdown.

In 2003 the United Way Volunteer Center and the Valparaiso University Softball team joined to create the I Need a Hug program to assist the guidance counselors in our elementary schools that could no longer physically comfort young children going through a crisis. Throughout the year, we ask the community businesses, churches, civic groups, and families to host a drive and collect new, small, stuffed animals that we provide to the counselors and are used to comfort the children. Last year we one of the participating schools asked us to provide a stuffed animal to each of the second grade students for a pilot literacy program called Reading Buddies. Students were tested reading skills were tested at the beginning of the year and again at the end of the year. Each day the students read out loud to their “Reading Buddy” and by the end of the school year the reading scores had risen significantly. When this information was shared with the other counselors, many schools have asked to participate in Reading Buddies which means we will need 8,000 stuffed animals per year to support the expanded I Need a Hug program in the 84 schools that implement this program.
