Center for Service Learning & Leadership -
Partnering With Purdue University North Central

CSLL

Are you a Community Organization with a service engagement opportunity to share with PNC faculty, staff and students?

Here is a How-To guide for becoming a partner with PNC's Center for Service Learning & Leadership.

  • What is the purpose of PNC's Center for Service Learning & Leadership (“CSLL”)?
The CSLL focuses on increasing campus and community engagement opportunities students while preparing them to become leaders within their future profession and communities. Furthermore, PNC and the CSLL are focused on bringing our communities onto the campus, and our campus into the community, by developing lasting partnerships through service learning courses, community service opportunities, and volunteer activities for our students, faculty and staff.

  • What is Service Learning?
Purdue University North Central defines service learning as a course-based, credit-bearing educational experience which combines community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility. Service learning courses incorporate organized community service that addresses local needs, while enabling students to fulfill course objectives. Through this process, students are able to develop and/or enhance their academic skills, personal values, and sense of community responsibility.

  • How can the CSLL help your organization?
The CSLL is always looking for new service engagement opportunities. Partnering with the CSLL fulfills a need for your organization while providing real world experience for our students through a service learning course, community service opportunities, or volunteer work.

  • What does a partnership with PNC mean for your organization?
Basically, it means an opportunity to partner with expert faculty in areas such as organizational leadership, social work, and communications, to name a few, and the chance to utilize the creative ideas and enthusiasm of today’s college students.  Learn more about service learning by visiting the CSLL’s website (www.pnc.edu/csll) or scheduling an appointment with the CSLL staff.

  • How can you identify possible projects?
PNC faculty and students can help with almost any need your organization has.  Past service learning projects include event planning and promotion; strategic planning and review; website and social media design, development and management; survey data analysis; and training development.  Remember to think outside the box and no need is too big or small, and the CSLL staff is happy to assist with identifying and developing potential projects.

  • How can your organization publicize opportunities?
Complete the Service Engagement Opportunity Form (enclosed or online at www.pnc.edu/csll/forms.html) and indicate the types of available projects or the needs of your organization. After returning this form, your project(s) will be added to the CSLL Opportunities website (www.pnc.edu/csll/opportunities.html) and distributed to interested faculty and students.

  • Opportunities that should be included with your organization’s information include:
    • Service Learning Projects - course-based educational experience combining community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical reflective thinking and civic responsibility.
    • Community Service Projects - ongoing service opportunity that may or may not be connected to an area of academic interest.
    • Volunteer Projects - one-time commitment that may or may not be connected to an area of academic interest.
