2010 Alternative Spring Break: "Service Road Trip"

Throughout the week of spring break, March 8-12, the Center for Service Learning & Leadership hosted an Alternative Spring Break. The "Service Road Trip" event was geared toward community agencies whose focus areas are poverty and homelessness. Individuals had the opportunity to work with five different agencies throughout the week.

On Monday, volunteers traveled to Sorrowful Mother Catholic Church Food Pantry in Wheatfield, Indiana. There volunteers cleaned the food pantry and reorganized the food on the shelves for easier packaging.

Tuesday volunteers traveled to Valparaiso, Indiana to work at Spring Valley Shelter. The volunteers were separated into two groups. One group organized books and a toy closet for the kids at the shelter. The Chicago room looked amazing after that group had finished. There were no more boxes of books instead they were organized on book shelves and the closets were neatly arranged into boys and girls toys. The second group was given a challenge. They were told by Glennas Kueck from Spring Valley Shelter, that if they could clean an apartment in the hours that they were there then a family would be able to move in. Needless to say that was all the motivation that the volunteers needed. They worked hard cleaning the entire apartment and when they were finished felt complete satisfaction at the work they had accomplished.

On Wednesday, volunteers made their way to Sandcastle Shelter in Michigan City, Indiana. The homeless shelter was in need of a good cleaning. Volunteers washed windows and rejuvenated the hardwood floors. Later in the afternoon it was down to the basement for a group of volunteers who painted walls in the hallway and laundry room.

Thursday was a unique day. There was no physical labor required for this project. Staff and Faculty helped collect food for the La Porte Salvation Army at Al's Supermarket. The generous support of the La Porte shoppers was greatly appreciated. AmeriCorps* VISTA Amanda Martin's car was jam packed with boxes and bags of groceries.

Friday was the final leg of the "Service Road Trip." Volunteers worked at the Westville Food Pantry located in the Resale Shop downtown. A storage room was cleaned out, floors were swept, the food pantry was cleaned and food put back on the shelves. The volunteers had a great time.

We hope to see many more people next year as we continue the Alternative Spring Break "Service Road Trip."
