August 31, 2005  - 7:00 p.m.

Motion was made and seconded to call the first official Psychology Club Meeting of the new semester to order on Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at 7:00 p.m.

Those in attendance were:

Annette T. Meadows, President                              Dr. Joanne Urschel, Sponsor

Camie Tyler, Vice-President                                   Dawn Harzula

Joe Semala, Treasurer                                            Stephanie Ohime

Jeanne Sanders. Secretary                                    Carolyn Hall

Each officer gave a report as follows:

President’s report:  The members/attendees were welcomed to the meeting.   All paperwork has been completed and accepted for the Psi Chi Honor Society application.  It should take approximately 6-8 weeks for approval of the Charter on the Purdue North Central Campus.  An induction ceremony will be planned as soon as confirmation is made that PNC Charter has been accepted.  It will be mandatory for all Psychology Club members to be in attendance.

Annette and Camie were able to get 25 new prospective students’ e-mail addresses at the New Student Orientation Day on campus, held prior to the start of the semester.

Annette has an additional $100.00 to deposit into the Psychology Club account from sales of the expandable photo albums, sold in the spring semester.

Vice President’s Report:  The Psychology Club website will be updated in the near future by Camie.

Treasurer’s Report:  Joe reports the Psychology Club finances presently total $253.04, and this will increase by $100.00 when Annette makes her deposit.

Old Business:

·        T-shirts:  We have a logo designed for Psychology Club t-shirts.  Joe is to call Graphic ??Inc for price quotes.  After we received our new T-shirts, we will be wearing them once a month to promote and advertise our Club.

·        Goodies:  Hope to have promotional items available to advertise our Club.

·        Social Journal:  Dr. Urschel reported that the 12 articles approved for the first publication will hopefully go to the printer in October.  Each academic year students will have an opportunity to submit their journalistic works towards the end of the spring semester, to be published then the following fall.

New Business:

·        In-Service Projects:  Annette wants to have an in-service on how to apply to grad school to include formatting resumes, acquiring letters of recommendation, etc.   Also Dawn suggested that we have an in-service on “what to do with a Behavioral Science degree, if I don’t go to grad school,” as there are many out there who have no idea where their degree could work for them.

·        Community Service Projects: Annette suggested providing school supplies for students at Porter Starke in Valparaiso.  Also she suggested a Christmas Project of gift boxes for the students at Porter-Starke.

·        Volunteer Opportunities: Dawn agreed to investigate the volunteering opportunities in Porter County and Michigan City areas.

·        Fundraisers 2005/06 School Year: Sale of photo albums, possibly at Alpha Sigma Lambda induction on September 30, 2005, 7 p.m.  F.A.C.E. also wants to buy some.  Annette suggested we have our Club fundraisers early in the semester and candy was one of the easiest things to sell. We need to decide what kind of candy we will sell.  Also raise money through selling popcorn, since popcorn machine is available.  Could sell for 25 cents per bag outside of cafeteria during peak times

·        Dr. Scipes’ wife would like to present a seminar on campus as she has traveled around the world working with traumatized children.  Dr. Urschel would like Ms. Scipes to visit/talk with her Crisis Intervention class.  Annette suggested a luncheon with round-table discussion to follow also would be a great idea. Dr. Urschel and Annette with talk with Dr. Scipes regarding scheduling this event.

All above items were voted on and accepted by the membership.

Open Forum:

Announcements:  Thursday, September 1, 2005, at 5 p.m. Orientation for all Clubs on campus to be held at LSF 144.

Purdue Pride Week:  We will have a booth at the September 7, Wednesday, call-out for all clubs on campus.  The theme will be Charley Brown and Lucy, as the psychic,

“The Dr. Is In”.   Different games, etc. will be used as table props to promote the idea of fortune-telling such as tea leaves, Tarot cards, chicken bones, crystal ball (provided by Camie).  Dawn, Annette and Dr. Urschel will set up the booth at 10:00 a.m. September 7, 2005.  Most of the club membership will be able to participate in manning the booth, unless they are in classes, between 11:00 am and 2 p.m.

Carolyn moved to approve this idea and it was seconded.
