In today's tough economic climate, those planning to go to college need to consider available career opportunities. Purdue University North Central offers a four-year degree and a post-graduate certificate in Computer and Information Technology (CIT) where career prospects are expected to grow much faster than average at least through the year 2016. The Purdue name is world-renown in the areas of Engineering and Technology, and the CIT degree could be your ticket to prosperity as the country comes out of its current economic predicament.
Enrollments in CIT degree programs have declined nationally over the last several years, while demand for CIT graduates has increased. Causes for the decline are attributed to the after-affects of the dot-com bubble burst of 2002, the incorrect perception that there are no new jobs in the field, concern over out-sourcing of current CIT jobs, and lack of female interest in the degree. Meanwhile, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 800,000 CIT jobs will be added across the nation between 2006 and 2016, and with retirements factored in, total job openings in this 10-year period are estimated at more than 1.5 million.
To find prospects for CIT professionals in our region, you can review the recently released 2009 Hoosier Hot 50 Jobs brochure. This publication lists high wage occupations in Indiana, ranked by growth and opportunity. The top three career opportunities for all of Indiana are CIT jobs, and a total of five jobs on the list require CIT degrees, with opportunities available in every region of the state. The Michigan Hot 50 Jobs list shows that similar prospects exist there. Six of the top 50 jobs in Michigan require CIT degrees and three of those jobs are in the top 25 jobs by percent growth through the year 2016.

The need for those with computer degrees will continue to increase as technologies become more sophisticated, offering great opportunities to the CIT graduate.
