CEDaR

Resources

The mission of CEDaR is to foster the economic development of Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan by:

  • offering educational opportunities related to economic development;
  • conducting research related to regional economic and public policy initiatives;
  • offering contract training services that support workforce development;
  • serving as a repository for regional reports and data

Economic Development Education. The faculty at PNC as well as the other regional institutions together with highly qualified individuals from the region possess the expertise that CEDaR can employ to educate individuals regarding the various nuances associated with economic development. Furthermore, there are discussions taking place with various faculty and professionals regarding the development and delivery of various non-credit workshops. Topical workshops regarding specific economic development issues may be directed toward individuals working in the area of economic development or as board members of various economic development councils/corporations and whose responsibility it is to oversee economic development endeavors for their region. Other workshops may be related to promoting and sustaining innovative and entrepreneurial endeavors by students and others.  Currently, discussions are taking place among four of the Purdue system schools for a “state-wide” push to promote entrepreneurship.

Economic Development and Public Policy Analysis. Faculty from within the COB and the other three colleges at PNC, the other institutions within the Purdue University system, as well as other institutions of higher education within the Northwest Indiana possess as wealth of knowledge, experience, and expertise related to numerous areas of economic development and public policy. To this end, they provide a rich resource available to the members within the region for purposes of conducting economic impact studies, regional development plans, and other studies of interest within the region.

Continuing Education. The economic development of any region depends upon the availability of a skilled workforce. Currently, PNC and the College of Business are actively involved in a variety of contract training engagements which provide governmental agencies, for-profit businesses and not-for-profit organizations programming related to leadership and workforce development. It is hoped that CEDaR would provide overarching administrative leadership, coordination and promotion of such activities. The following faculty members in the College of Business are currently teaching CE courses related to CEDaR’s mission: Carolyn Roper, Cynthia Roberts, Sarah Smith, Derek Bjonback, David Hay, and Donna Whitten.

Centralized Regional Data Repository. Throughout the region, various organizations and entities gather and maintain data bases and generate reports that have great importance for their immediate constituents. Unfortunately, there is no centralized clearinghouse or repository where such information is readily available for a more widespread access and dissemination. One goal for CEDaR would be to create a repository or clearinghouse where such information is centralized and available for distribution to interested parties.
