Michael S. Zimmerman is a career police officer with the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, poet, and children’s book author. He has many years of experience in all levels of problem solving through his career, marriage, and role as a father of two young children.  He promotes safety, social interaction, and self reliance of children through life’s stories. His first children’s book was developed in teaching his children a piece of life’s lessons and was co-illustrated by his four year old son Brandon.

The Mouse and the Acorn:
Promoting Youthful Problem Solving

The reading of the children’s book, The Mouse and the Acorn, and interaction with audience during a Power Point Presentation is designed to illustrate the simplicity of connecting with children and their views on life in encountering simple problem solving tasks. The secondary purpose is to reflect that any child is capable of great things if given the opportunity. Through the short illustrated book the author allows the children to use their imagination and be entertained while recognizing potential dangers and understand that self reliance is obtainable in situations given enough thought and willingness to think outside the box.
