Barbara Gustin is the Director of the School City of Hammond Head Start program.  She has worked in the field of early childhood education for over 20 years, specializing in the fields of program management, professional development and parent engagement.  She is a guest lecturer at Purdue University Calumet. She also is the Chairperson of the 1st Kids Board, which oversees the Northwest Indiana First Steps program.

Play is not a Four-Letter Word

Making the statement “children learn through play”, can result in various reactions.  Some of those reactions are based on confusing what we typically think of when we hear the word “play” and the developmental/constructivist view of play.  This workshop will dispel the confusion between the two types of play, examine how preschool children really learn and help participants explain developmental/constructivist play to parents, other educators and the community.
