TRAVEL-STUDY TRIPS – 2010

Purdue University North Central’s Travel Study Programs take you to places you have only dreamed of.  Realize your destination in a way that is unique and entirely different than a “regular” vacation.  Visit sites that are off the beaten path.  Experience the special privileges that are reserved for those who are accompanied by experts or researchers.  Relive the experiences as only those who are “in-the-know” can relate them.

Washington D.C.
HIST 492 – Washington DC – The History, Politics, and Culture the Shaped Our Nation

3 credit hours

From its humble beginnings during the Revolutionary War to the major tourist attraction it is today, Washington DC serves as a symbol of freedom for millions of Americans. This course will explore the history of this great American city while examining the political and cultural movements it has undergone over the past three centuries. Class activities will include visits to the White House, Congress and the Supreme Court, giving students an inside look at the inner workings of politics today; viewing the most important document in American history – the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives; tours of various Smithsonian Museums to discover the artifacts, stories, and people who helped build this city and our nation; and cultural events that can only be experienced in Washington DC.

Planned activities:
- Tour of the White House
- Tour of Congress
- Tour of the Supreme Court
- Tour of the National Archives
- Visits to select Smithsonian Museums
- Tour of Washington DC at night
- Day trip to Mt. Vernon-President Washington's home
- Exploring Washington DC from the Civil War to Civil Rights
- Other optional activities (not included in program fee)

Program Fees: In addition to the cost of tuition and fees, students are responsible for a $337 program fee*, transportation costs to and from Washington, DC, some meals and personal incidental costs. Contact the Office of Continuing Education for more information.

Peru
HIST 425 – Social and Ecological History of the Andes
SPAN 280 – Directed Studies for 2nd Year Spanish

Live and breathe the culture of Perú while learning the customs and language of the beautiful Peruvian people.  You will visit the incredible Incan ruins at Machu Picchu and explore the homes, temples and astronomical observation centers where the Incas lived, worshipped and studied the heavens.  You will also spend time in Lima, the capital of Perú.  There you will experience the Spanish language and Peruvian culture and also have the opportunity to explore the city’s delicious cuisine, interesting museums, large artisan centers, and much more.  This is a fantastic experience that you just can’t miss.  ¡Vamos a Perú!

Natural History of the Great Smoky Mountains

Discover the splendor of the most rugged mountains in Appalachia! The Great Smoky Mountains preserve a rich cultural tapestry of Southern Appalachian history. This extraordinary travel/study course brings you into contact with the ecosystem of a temperate forest where plant life, sparkling mountain streams and breath-taking vistas are your classroom. Explore the wildlife, plant life, ecology, geology, and environmental concepts unique to the Smoky Mountains. Step into a world of breathtaking wonder and beauty!
