All instructors are lifetime gardeners and have completed the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Master Gardener training program.
Part 1 - Preserving the Bounty
The first of the three-part series will review and demonstrate the proper techniques, as recommended by the USDA for canning, freezing, and drying. There are many reasons for preserving your own foods, but using the techniques and equipment that Grandma used 40 years ago may not be safe. Instructor is Annetta Jones, County Extension Director and Consumer and Family Sciences Extension Educator for Purdue University Cooperative Extension-Porter County. Ms. Jones is a graduate of Purdue University with a BS and MS in Home Economics Education. As an Extension Educator, she provides informal research-based educational Family and Consumer Sciences programs. She completed the Master Food Preserver Training in 2007 and provides assistance to the home food preserver via programs and phone inquiries.
Part 2 - Prepare Your Lawn and Garden for Winter
The second of the three-class series will help you put your lawn and garden to bed for the winter. Making the right decisions in fall helps make for a healthier lawn and garden next season. Fall is the best time to improve cool season lawns. Learn the basic steps to a healthy lawn and what to do before winter to keep your lawn and garden looking great. Instructor is Jim Hitz, who received his B.S. from Western Michigan University, teaching certification from Michigan State University, and MS in Horticulture from Purdue University.
Part 3 - Preserving Plants
In the final class of the series, you'll learn how to use gathered plant material to accent your home. Find out which plants preserve well and when and where to gather them. Each student will design a grape vine wreath using provided dried plants and flowers. Instructor Foy Spicer is a graduate of Iowa State University. Her experience includes working at four public gardens, five years as a florist and two years in Peace Corps Panama working with small scale ornamental plant production.
