PU/NC Portal’s Contest Winners Named

WESTVILLE – Nine winners have been named in the Purdue University North Central student writing contest. The winning selections will be published in "Portals," a literary journal that is published each summer by PU/NC through the Letters & Languages Section.

The winners are as follows:

English Composition—Non-Research Paper: First place, "The House Across The Street" by Terri Bartels, Michigan City; second place, "Luhr County Park" by Janet Lee Lanning, LaPorte; third place, "Lost Appearance" by David Riley, Westville.

The Research Essay: First place, "Promoting Racial Progress: The Differing Views of W. E. B. DuBois and Malcolm X" by Lesa M. Cotto, LaPorte; second place, "The HIV/AIDS Crisis of Lesbians and Other Women" by Elaine V. Gee, Chesterton; third place, "‘Reader I Married Him’: Miscegenation in the 19th-Century American Novel" by Lesa M. Cotto, LaPorte.

Personal Essay: First place, Pets: "A Satirical View" by David Riley, Westville; second place, "‘The Snow Man’: The Careful Observer" by Lesa M. Cotto, LaPorte; third place, "Creativity in Prison" by Kristina Handzlik, Wanatah.

Carol D’Aloisio Poetry Prize: First place, "The Following May Contain Scenes Unsuitable for The More Sensitive Viewer" by Nancy C. Howell, Michigan city; second place, "May" by Nancy C. Howell, Michigan City; third place, "Airing Things Out" by J. A. Carpenter, LaPorte.

Short Fiction: First place, "Little Papers" by Nancy C. Howell, Michigan City; second place, "Mealtime" by Phil Keller, Westville; third place "Patchwork" by Lesa M. Cotto, LaPorte.

John J. Pappas Literary Essay Award: "The Sculpting of Choice" by Nancy C. Howell, Michigan City

John Stanfield Prize: "Pets: A Satirical View" by David Riley, Westville.

The art and photography winners include Danny Farrell, Westville, photography; Tessa Rampage, LaPorte, photography; Nancy C. Howell, Michigan City, photography; and Julia A. Nielsen, LaPorte, line art.
