FROM CONCEPT TO REALITY:
Five Sculptors Face the Art

Virtually every human effort requires a creative gesture — which evolves into an idea — the concept.

Five sculptors, who are participating in the yearlong Odyssey 2001 Sculpture Exhibit, share the seeds of their concepts, which became their final works here at Purdue University North Central.

We invite you to view these maquettes — models — and accompanying comments by the artists.

The maquettes are on display in the Technology Building 1st Floor Lounge.

When you can, return to the corresponding works outside and observe the sculptures again.

As David Finn, noted photographer of sculpture, worldwide, has said, "The greatest reward of experiencing sculpture is that you, the viewer, are in part, the creator. . .fine sculpture invites constant exploration.

Some Things to Ponder:
With artists' reflections in hand, did you look at the pieces differently?

Does knowing the concept intended by the artist add to the sculpture's "weight" in a symbolic sense?

Does all sculpural work, at some level, embody realism?

Can sculpture be devoid of site specifics?
