Preston
Jackson has provided an important history lesson about the
hardships of several immigrant groups in his stainless steel and
bronze, Haints and History. Haints, the freed souls of the dead,
accompany a ship of Africans, Irish and Jews who, among many
immigrant groups, suffered in their experiences coming to
America. Nine major figures are on board the 25 foot-long piece
which, like several other pieces in this show, garnered a great
deal of attention when they debuted at Pier Walk, the world's
largest outdoor contemporary sculpture show, on Chicago's Navy
Pier.
Jackson
is director of the figurative sculpture department at the School
of the Art Institute, and directs a community art center in
Peoria. His works are widely displayed.
