PNC Celebrates Global Youth Service Day: Day of Learning & Service

Westville – Purdue University North Central students will join millions of youth around the world in organizing community service projects to help address the needs of their communities as they take part in the Purdue North Central Day of Learning & Service on April 24.

The Day of Learning & Service is part of the international celebration of Global Youth Service Day.

“This is a day set aside for people to come together and recognize what our students are doing everyday to benefit the communities surrounding PNC,” said Laura Weaver, coordinator of Service Learning at PNC.

The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the PNC Library-Student-Faculty Building (LSF) Room 170A with a poster presentation by students currently engaged in service learning projects as a part of their coursework and as members of student organizations engaged in on-going service to the community.

Students or organizations interested in participating must complete the registration form and return it to Weaver by Monday, April 20. Registration forms can be found at www.pnc.edu/csll .

At 10:45 a.m. in LSF Assembly Hall, Room 02, Maggie Stevens, executive director of Indiana Campus Compact, will speak to the campus community about the importance of service engagement and how to become more involved.

A celebration lunch will take place at noon in LSF Room LSF 170A to honor and thank participants for their continued dedication to service learning. The day will wrap up with a service project at various health clinics in the area that serve those in need.

“PNC has a long history of service to the community and our participation in Global Youth Service Day is just one more way our students are becoming engaged,” according to Weaver.

The PNC Center for Service Learning & Leadership, in partnership with PNC Medical Ethics course taught by Dr. Nancy Marthakis, assistant professor of Biology, received a $1,000 grant to help fund the Day of Learning & Service activities and to promote service learning on campus. PNC is one of 100 State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grant winners chosen by Youth Service America, funded by State Farm Companies Foundation.
