Annual PNC Writing Contest Winners Announced

WESTVILLE – The winners of the Purdue University North Central annual Student Writing Contest for the 2008-2009 year have been announced by Robert Mellin, continuing lecturer of English and director of the writing contest. The winning entries are published in Portals , the annual PNC student literary journal.

The contest judging teams included faculty, staff as well as students.

There will be a banquet to honor the winners on April 30, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on campus.

The winners are:

Personal Essay : first place – “Lemonade Squeezed from Two Raisins,” by Angel Kolivas, Michigan City ; second place – “Any Child,” by Ginny Borolov, Michigan City : third place – “Home for Christmas,” by Haleigh Walker, Walkerton.

English Composition Research Essay: f irst place - “Should American Sign Language Fulfill Foreign Language Credits?” by Sarah Lasser, Valparaiso ; second place - “Beauty Is as Beauty Does,” by Sarah Redmond, Valparaiso .

Poetry: first place - “Sounds of Summer,” by Austin White, Chesterton; second place - “Circularity,” by Jessica Ring, Portage; third place (tie) - “Solitude,” by Karen Arden, LaPorte; "Leaves of Earth," by Joyce Taylor, LaPorte.

Short Fiction: first place - “The Wood Sprite,” by Jim Fox, LaPorte, second place - "Trials and Tribulations” by Ashleigh Griswold, LaPorte.

Art Contest: first place – “My Ancestry" by Cynthia DeSantiago, LaPorte; second place - “Looking Back," by Pleasant Gagaleski, Rolling Prairie.
