PNC American Sign Language Club Silent Dinner
Westville – Purdue University North Central American Sign Language Club will host a Silent Dinner on Wednesday, April 9 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Culver's Restaurant, 3966 Frontage Road, Michigan City. The event is open to ASL students as well as all community members.
Silent Dinner participants are asked to use ASL only for conversation and to place orders – a student may translate orders into English for the server or participants may point to the menu or write out an order. This is an opportunity to use ASL for conversation. Participants can be ASL beginners or fluent, or simply interested in knowing more.
ASL club officers and ASL faculty will have vouchers available to everyone who is ordering food and beverage at this event. Culver's will donate a percentage of all orders placed with those vouchers to the PNC ASL Club. Participants are reminded that they do not need to order a meal in order to attend. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the ASL Club fundraising effort to sponsor a deaf girl from Michigan City to attend Camp Willard this summer. Camp Willard is organized by Indiana School for the Deaf where the primary language is Sign Language. Donations will also be accepted.
Further information about ASL at Purdue North Central and the ASL Club may be obtained by contacting Karen Donah, PNC continuing lecturer and Coordinator of American Sign Language, at 800-872-1231, , ext. 5432 or kdonah@pnc.edu. Persons with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Donah.
