Purdue North Central Welcomes New Faculty Members

WESTVILLE – Purdue University North Central welcomes new faculty members for the 2006 – 2007 academic year.

They are:

Sheila Barry, visiting assistant professor of English. She earned her master’s degree in English Literature at the University of Montréal. Barry previously taught at Niagara College and Brock University in Canada and in the United Arab Emirates.

Ronald Brownie, assistant professor of Organizational Leadership and Supervision. He is pursuing his Ph.D. at Barry University, in Miami Shores, Fla. He holds many professional certifications in Human Resources, Quality Control and related fields.

Ann Carver, visiting assistant professor of English. Carver earned her master’s degree in English Literature from Purdue University. She has been teaching at PNC since January and previously taught at Purdue Calumet and Loyola University in Chicago.

Cheryl DeLeon, assistant professor of Psychology. She was awarded her Ph.D. from the University of West Virginia and wrote a dissertation on the topic, “Correlates of 9-Month-Old Infants’ Night Awakening.” DeLeon was a visiting assistant professor at PNC last year.

Karen Donah, continuing lecturer in American Sign Language. Donah holds a master’s degree from Anderson College, and is a licensed interpreter and trainee appraiser. She’s been with PNC since January.

Mary Jane Eisenhauer, visiting assistant professor of Education. She has an Ed.D. from the National College of Education, National-Louis University. She has a professional interest in early childhood education. She previously taught at PNC as well as at National-Louis University, Loyola University and Roosevelt University.

Harchini Fernando, assistant professor of Mathematics. Having earned a Ph.D. from Texas Tech University, Fernando authored the dissertation, “Small Sample Inference in Nonlinear Regression Models.”

Sara Gerend, assistant professor of English. She was awarded her Ph.D. from the University of California-Santa Barbara. Her dissertation topic was “Spectral Modernity: Ghosts of Empire in the Twentieth Century.” Her work has appeared in several journal publications.

Paul Hecht, assistant professor of English. He earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University and authored the dissertation, “Studies in the Shepheardes Calender." Hechet is also the author of several journal publications and conference papers on Shakespeare and Ben Jonson. In the spring of 2007, Hecht will direct a new PNC play at he Mainstreet Theatre, Michigan City, and will teach accompanying theatre courses. Trained by Massachusetts-based Shakespeare & Company, he has special theatrical interest in Shakespeare and his contemporaries.

Sharron Jenkins, assistant professor of Chemistry. She has a Ph.D. from Loyola University in Chicago, and presented the dissertation, “pH and Osmolality Effects on Lipid-enhanced Sickle and Normal Hemoglobin Oxidation.” She taught at PNC as a visiting assistant professor last year.

Marne Juestel, assistant professor of Nursing. Juestel earned her doctor of Nursing at Rush University in Chicago. She previously was an assistant professor at Valparaiso University and was an emergency room nurse practitioner at St. Anthony’s Health Center.

Shirley Keeton, assistant professor of Sociology. Keeton earned her Ph.D. at Louisiana State University. Her dissertation topic was “To Thine Own Self (and Thine Associates) Be True: The Strategic Management of Conflicting Identities Among Female Academics.” She has several years of teaching experience and her work has appeared in numerous publications.

Robert John Manning, professor of English and head of the PNC Humanities Programs. He has a Ph.D., from the University of Edinburgh. He most recently served as chair of the Department of English at the University of Wales. He was general editor for a series of books on Hamlet and was editor of the journal “New Hamlet Studies.” His most recent book was “Critical Reception of Hamlet 1850-1900” printed in 2006.

Larryl Matthews, professor of Engineering and dean of the College of Engineering & Technology. Matthews earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University. Most recently he served as dean and professor of Engineering at the University of Maine. He is the author of more than 60 refereed publications. Matthews has been especially effective in program development, fundraising and alumni development.

Rosa E. Rivera-Hainaj, assistant professor of Chemistry. She holds a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University. Previously, she served as an assistant professor at James Madison University where she received several fellowships and authored numerous publications in biochemistry.

Sharon Tutlewski, visiting assistant professor of Nursing. She earned her master’s degree in Nursing at Valparaiso University. She previously taught at PNC, and most recently served as a nurse practitioner at North Shore Health Center.

Aaron Warren, assistant professor of Physics. A recipient of a Ph.D. from Rutgers University, his dissertation topic was, “Developing and Assessing Student Evaluation Abilities and Their Effects.”

Albert Zambone, visiting assistant professor of History. He is a Ph.D. candidate at Oxford University. Dissertation: “After Their Usual Custom: Popular Anglicanism and Intellectual Culture in Virginia, 1690-1740.”

Maria Ofelia Ziegenfus, visiting assistant professor of Spanish. She earned her master’s degree from the University of the Americas in Mexico City. She previously taught Spanish at Purdue Calumet and Indiana University Northwest.

Stacey Zurek, continuing lecturer in Education and coordinator of Instructional Technology. She earned her master’s degree in Instructional Technology from Purdue Calumet and is currently completing a doctoral program in Educational Technology at Purdue University West Lafayette. She most recently served as manager of Instructional Technology for the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.
