PNC Math Club Hosts Presentation

WESTVILLE – The Purdue University North Central Math Club will host the presentation, “Complex Dynamics of Quadratic Polynomial f(z) = z2 + c” by Dr. Hasina Akter, PNC visiting professor of Mathematics

on Monday, Oct. 29, at noon, in Schwarz Hall, Room 360 . The event is free and open to the public. Guests may bring a lunch to enjoy during the presentation.

For the function f(z) = z2 + c, Akter will study the dynamics of the function f and he explains that the group will study the iterates f n(z) = (f o f o … o f)(z) as well as the Fatou set and the Julia set of dynamical systems. On the Fatou set, the dynamics of the rational map is regular and iterates of nearby starting points have the same long-term behavior. On the Julia set, the dynamics are chaotic, nearby points are driven apart by iteration and long-term behavior is sensitively dependent on the choice of initial point.

The PNC Math Club encourages persons of all interests who have a curiosity about Math to attend and learn more. Non-Math majors are welcomed .

The Math Club meets throughout the academic year and sponsors discussions and informational presentations on various aspects of mathematics and related fields. All events are open to the public.
