PNC Earns Convention & Tourism Bureau Landmark
Award
WESTVILLE Purdue University North Central Odyssey
Arts and Cultural Events Series won the Landmark Award presented
by the LaPorte County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The
award recognizes a business or event that helps to promote
LaPorte County as a tourism destination.
The PNC Odyssey Arts and Cultural Events Series multi-piece
contemporary sculpture exhibit has been a part of the campus
for five years and has grown from a display of nine sculptures
to the 27 that are part of the 2003 - 04 exhibit. Guests to
the PNC campus are welcome to enjoy the sculptures as part
of an easily navigated walking tour. Each year countless individuals,
groups, tours and school field trips come to PNC to view the
sculptures.
Judy Jacobi, PNC director of marketing and coordinator of
the Odyssey Arts and Cultural Events Series, is available
to give guided sculpture tours. Jacobi adapts each to the
interests of the participants, sharing detailed information
about each piece and its artist. She can be reached at 1-800-872-1231,
ext. 5593.
The sculpture exhibit has been featured in the March issue
of Sculpture Magazine, the publication of the International
Sculpture Center. It has been photographed by area publications
and has been the backdrop for a Discovery Network television
show.
Tom Scarff, curator of the PNC Odyssey sculpture shows, invites
others to see the exhibit, noting, "This show is filled
with challenging pieces. Expect many visual knockouts.
Sculptor Bob Emser, former executive director of PierWalk,
at Chicagos Navy Pier, said he was honored to have his
piece, Shelter from the Storm, at PNC. The
space for sculpture here is remarkable, with many open and
garden sites for pieces. To my knowledge, there is no other
university of this size in this country that has this many
sculptures on its grounds.
The Odyssey
Arts and Cultural Events Series features a variety of
other events throughout the year, including art exhibits,
film showings, lectures on topics of current interest and
shows, such as the recent display of Frank Lloyd Wright items.
The 2004 05 Odyssey Arts and Cultural Events Series
will debut Oct. 7.
