WESTVILLE - Purdue University North Central student Carol James, of LaPorte, and faculty member Christine Lehmann, were honored recently by the Indiana Association for Developmental Education (INADE).

James earned the Outstanding Student in Developmental Education award, presented by Dr. Linda Duttlinger, PNC associate professor of Developmental Studies and INADE president. INADE is the state chapter of the National Association for Developmental Educators (NADE) and is open to interested higher education professionals. INADE also honored Dr. Christine Lehmann, PNC associate professor of Mathematics, with its award for Service to Developmental Education.

Duttlinger explained that James entered PNC 11 years after her high school graduation. A single mother, James is a mentor and role model for other students. She became a peer tutor when students came to her for help with their math classes. James is now in calculus classes and serves as a tutor to students through the Student Support Services program as well as students who enrolled in the Liberal Arts Learning Community. She also tutors a third-grade student off campus. On her own, she earned her College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) tutor certification.

“She combines a fascination with, and love of, mathematics with a cool and confident “you-can-do-it” attitude toward the students she tutors,” said Duttlinger. “She is planning to become a mathematics teacher. She is able to demonstrate and model the value of time management, responsibility and planning. ”

Lehmann has taught at PNC since 1980 and is Developmental Mathematics coordinator, responsible for two of the largest mathematics courses offered on campus – Fundamentals of Algebra and Algebra. She supervises instructors, writes unit tests, prepares comprehensive final examinations and updates a student course pack for Fundamentals of Algebra that assists students in learning about variables. She was presented the Student Support Services Director’s Award in 2004. Lehmann is a long-time member of INADE and NADE and is a frequent annual conference presenter. She is active in PNC faculty governance and spent several years as Faculty Senate vice chair and Agenda Committee chair. She is secretary of the Science division faculty and wrote the science division bylaws. According to the chair of her department, Dr. Keith Schwingendorf, “when I need advice as a chair, I go to her first. She always gives a balanced viewpoint.”
