PNC Hispanic Heritage Month Activities
Westville – Purdue University North Central celebrates October as Hispanic Heritage Month with a range of activities. All events are free and open to the public.
Oct. 13 - 12:30 p.m. Library-Student-Faculty Building Assembly Hall, Room 02, “Peru-Diverse Lands, Histories and Cultures” a presentation by Martha Garcia-Saenz, associate professor of Building and Dr. Ken Kincaid, assistant professor of History.
Oct. 14 - 12:30 p.m., Library-Student-Faculty Building Room 170A, Hispanic Heritage film, “A Day Without a Mexican.”
Oct. 19 - 12:30 p.m., Library-Student-Faculty Building Room 170A, Hispanic Heritage film “Maria Full of Grace.”
Oct. 20 - Noon, Library-Student-Faculty Building Room 170A, Books and Coffee presentation , Kincaid, will review “American Chica: Two Worlds, One Childhood,” by Maria Arana.
Oct. 20 - 1 to 3 p.m , Library-Student-Faculty Building Room 170A, Sabor Latino Sabor Latino will include a variety of foods and and Latin Music by Pancho and Carolyn Rodea.
Oct. 25 - Noon to 2 p.m., Library-Student-Faculty Building Room 144, Salsa lessons.
Oct. 26 - 12:30 p.m., Library-Student-Faculty Building Room 170A, Hispanic Heritage film, “Sugar”.
Oct. 28 - 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Library-Student-Faculty Building Room 144, Hispanics in Northwest Indiana: Past and Future, featuring James Lane, retired professor of History, Indiana University Northwest; will provide a general outline of the history of Latinos in Northwest Indiana; Ramon and Trisha Arredondo, authors of “Maria's Journey” published by Indiana Historical Society, will talk about María Pérez Arredondo and East Chicago, Monica Cavinder, the Michigan City El Puente Center Community Center will discuss health-related issues and support for Latinos; José Guadalupe Valtierra, chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College Northwest , will talk about Hispanics and higher education and immigration legislation.
Activities are sponsored by the PNC Multicultural Club, Latin American Studies, Library, the Chancellor's Diversity Initiative Grant; Student Services Diversity Mini-Grant and the Department of Social Sciences.
