The 57th season of the Purdue University North Central Sinai Forum will open on Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. at Elston Middle School, 317 Detroit Street, in Michigan City with noted author and television reporter Lisa Ling.

Ling started her career in journalism at age 21 when she covered the civil war in Afghanistan for Channel One News. She has gone on to report for ABC News “Nightline” and National Geographic's “Explorer” and has been a field correspondent for Oprah. She was a co-host of ABC's “The View” when it won its first daytime Emmy. In 2010 Ling will have her own series on the Oprah Winfrey Network, OWN, named INSIDE with Lisa Ling

She has traveled the world and visited some of the most violent places on the globe to bring the world in-depth coverage of the news and events that are often ignored – such as brutal gang rapes in the Congo and the practice of bride burning in India. She's hunted down cocaine processing labs and shared tea with the Dalai Lama.

She also pursued a personal battle to free her sister who was held captive in North Korea. That ordeal is chronicled in the book she co-authored with her sister Laura. “Somewhere Inside: One Sister's Captivity in North Korea and The Other's Fight to Bring Her Home.”

Her talk promises to be as gripping as the news she covers. A book signing will follow.
