PNC Faculty Earn Indiana Campus Compact Grants

Westville – Two Purdue University North Central faculty members have been distinguished by Indiana Campus Compact (ICC) to grants that will help to advance student service learning and civic engagement.

Dr. Nancy Marthakis, assistant professor of Microbiology, was selected as one of eight members of the 14th class of Faculty Fellow program. She will receive an Enhancing Student Learning and Retention through Service-Learning and Civic Engagement grant provided by the Lilly Endowment, Inc. Program participants are involved with integrating service-learning and community engagement with faculty teaching, research, and professional service.

Each fellow will develop new service-learning courses to be taught on their individual campuses and provide a professional service to a not-for-profit agency. The fellows will be able to work as a group to produce a creative project or scholarly white paper on service-engagement for national publication toward promotion and tenure.

Dr. Mary Jane Eisenhauer, assistant professor of Elementary Education, earned the ICC Scholarship of Engagement Faculty Grant, funded by the Lilly Endowment, for her proposed project Pebbles in the Pond: Service Learning in Early Childhood Education. Eisenhauer will use the grant to further develop her Early Childhood Education course that focuses on the relationship between children, families and the community.

The Scholarship of Engagement Faculty Grant is intended to help fund the development and implementation of academic courses, research projects, or professional service activities that engage faculty and students in the community. They are intended to support partnerships between institutions of higher education and the community, strengthen student learning, increase the institutionalization of service-based engaged learning, and enhance the professional development of faculty.
