PNC & Library Present Joan Chesterton Arts Talk
WESTVILLE Joan Chesterton, Purdue University North Central professor emerita and art historian, will give a visual presentation, What's Happening in American Art? (And How Did We Get Here?) on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Michigan City Public Library, 100 E. Fourth St., and again on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at Purdue University North Central in the Library-Student-Faculty Building Assembly Hall, Room 02, at noon.
Her talk is presented as part of the PNC Odyssey 2011 - 2012 Arts and Cultural Events Series.
Chesterton will share her knowledge and insights as she takes a detailed look at the rising stars and current trends in American art.
Among her topics:
Painting Young artists who cast a fresh eye on realism and abstraction.
Sculpture The sculptors who broaden their options in media and find inspiration in found materials such as steel and glass.
Photography This generation's photographers who point their cameras at iconic spaces: the shopping mall and the rock concert.
Multi-media installations A look at the artists and how they employ a variety of media in a single work, perhaps designed for a specific site, including today's installation artists as they create an exciting, occasionally mystifying environment for the viewer.
Architecture The Aqua, a high-rise vision, with its curving concrete balconies can slow traffic on Chicago's Lake Shore Drive. The architect earned the 2011 Macarthur Genius Award for this internationally known building.
Chesterton will conclude with cameos of American Masters from the near and distant past- from Winslow Homer to Andy Warhol.
In recent years, Chesterton has offered a number of well-attended, compelling visual presentations that have explored various aspects of the arts. She has extensive knowledge and experience in art history and education, having worked with the Des Moines Art Center and written for and lectured at the Milwaukee Museum of Art. She was director of education at the Dayton Art Institute and has a Master of Arts degree in Literature and Art History from the University of Illinois .
