PNC Cheerleader Safety Workshop and National Certification

WESTVILLE – Purdue University North Central will host a workshop and exam for national safety certification for coaching high school level and college level cheerleading on Wednesday, June 10, led by the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors (AACCA).

The workshop will begin at noon, followed by the exam and will tentatively end by 4 p.m. The fee is $75 per person. AACCA certification is accepted nationally by UCA and NCA for high school level and college level cheerleading.

In Indiana , a law was passed in 2005 making the Indiana Department of Education responsible for overseeing safety issues with cheerleading in Indiana . The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics ( NAIA ) adheres to strict safety regulations and coaches certification. Safety regulations for high school level and college level cheerleading may be found at www.aacca.org . AACCA certification is a valuable educational tool for high school and college coaches, athletic directors and others directly and indirectly related to cheerleading. Coaching without certification or adherence to safety regulations can be a dangerous combination for a cheerleading participant or program. Nationally, more injuries occur in cheerleading than in football.

Jean-Ann Morton, head coach, PNC Cheer/Dance/Mascot, has AACCA certification, as is required by any PNC assistant cheer coaching staff.

Registration is due by Monday, June 8. To register, or to obtain more information, contact Morton at 785-5200, ext. 5202, or e-mail jmorton@pnc.edu . Persons with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact ext. 5202.
