PNC Books and Coffee Series Continues

WESTVILLE – Purdue University North Central will continue the "Books & Coffee" discussion series during the coming months. The programs, which are free and open to the public, will meet from noon to about 1 p.m. in Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 170A, located adjacent to the cafeteria.

Each session will feature a review of the book, followed by a discussion period. The books being reviewed are available for purchase from the PNC Bookstore. This year's selections include:

Feb. 16 - Colleen Lacey, limited-term lecturer, will review “Wolf Hall” by Hilary Mantel. “Wolf Hall” earned the 2009 Booker Prize.

March 16 – Robert Mellin, continuing lecturer of English, will review “The Death of Innocence: The Story of the Hate Crime that Changed America,” by Christopher Benson.

At 3 p.m., in Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 144, author Christopher Benson will be on campus to discuss his book, "The Death of Innocence: The Story of the Hate Crime that Changed America."

Benson co-wrote the book with Mamie Till-Mobley, Emmett Till's mother. The book is Mamie Till-Mobley's narrative of what many consider to be the important turning point in U.S. civil rights history, the day that Emmett Till was murdered. And it a mother's wonderful and humane account of the young, living Emmett.

Benson also details the ways that laws concerning hate speech and hate crime emanated with the Till murder.

During his talk, Benson will discuss his book, and will address hate speech and hate crime in general.

April 20 - Dr. Jesse Cohn, associate professor of English, will review “Revolution and Other Writings: A Political Reader” by Gustav Landauer.
