PNC Honored by LaPorte County United Way

Westville – Purdue University North Central and several employees were honored by the United Way of LaPorte County at its annual Victory Celebration

The United Way of LaPorte County designated PNC as a 2010 Cornerstone Award Organization. This award recognizes the largest contributing organizations in LaPorte County whose combined organization and employee group contributions form a fundamental and indispensible cornerstone of community support.

PNC Chancellor James B. Dworkin accepted the award on behalf of Purdue North Central. Dworkin is a member of the United Way of LaPorte County Campaign Cabinet. The cabinet is composed of community and business leaders who lend their expertise to the annual United Way campaign. He also serves as co-chair for Leadership Giving in LaPorte County. In addition, he is an emeritus member and chair of the United Way Board of D irectors.

Also honored by the United Way was Dr. Mary Jane Eisenhauer, PNC assistant professor of Education, who was presented with the Success by 6 Service to Children Award. This is the first year this honor has been given. It recognizes an individual who has been a pioneer in improving the lives of young children in LaPorte County.

Eisenhauer is providing ongoing support to the United Way Success by 6 initiative as part of her Indiana Campus Compact Faculty Fellowship.

Fred H. Miller, PNC retiree, member of the PNC Advisory Board and United Way board member emeritus, earned the Burton B. Ruby Award, named in honor of the United Way board chair emeritus Burton B. Ruby. The award is given in recognition of commitment to the principles of volunteerism and service above self, typified by service so significantly above and beyond the call of duty that no other award would be appropriate.

“Purdue North Central has long been committed to helping the United Way fulfill its mission in our community,” said Dworkin. “Our employees are generous in giving to the United Way each year and we participate in the Loaned Executive program. In addition we have Dr. Karen Schmid, PNC vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, and Fred McNulty, director of Engagement, volunteering their time and expertise as members of the United Way of LaPorte County Board of Directors. Also, Dr. Christabel Rogalin, assistant professor of Sociology, and Dr. Dominic Micer, assistant professor of English, serve on the Allocations Committee. A group of PNC Marketing students assisted the United Way in enhancing its various social media features, including its website, FaceBook and YouTube sites. Many of our students, faculty and staff donate their time to United Way agencies as well. The Purdue North Central campus community is proud to be a part of the United Way.”
