OCTOBER SINAI FORUM FEATURES DR. ANTONIA NOVELLO
Westville – Sinai Forum Presented by Purdue University North Central will feature guest speaker Dr. Antonia Novello, former Surgeon General of the United States and UNICEF Special Representative for Health and Nutrition, on Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. at Elston Middle School . This presentation is sponsored by Indiana University Northwest. Please note this is a special starting time for this program.
Novello will address the topic of “U.S. Health Care Reform.” She has earned a reputation as an outspoken advocate for public health issues. This program will provide valuable information and promises to prompt a stimulating exchange during the question and answer period.
Her appointment in 1990 as the 14th Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Services was historic as she was the first woman and first Hispanic to hold this position. Novello is known for pushing the envelope on educating the public. As Surgeon General, she advised the public on health matters, such as smoking, AIDS, diet and nutrition, environmental health hazards, and the importance of immunization and disease prevention. She also directed the activities of the 6,100 members of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
Novello is president of Health Research, Inc., a not-for- profit corporation affiliated with the New York State Department of Health. She is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha (the Honors Society of the Medical Profession), The Institute of Medicine and the Women's Hall of Fame.
This is the 55 th season of the Forum. This season is dedicated to the memory of Forum founder Sylvia Bankoff. All Sinai Forum programs are held at Elston Middle School , 317 Detroit St. , Michigan City .
