PNC Nursing Students Organize Health Fair

Westville – Ten registered nurses, who are students enrolled in the Purdue University North Central Department of Nursing Bachelor's Degree program will present a free health fair on Thursday, Dec. 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Marquette High School in Michigan City .

The Health Fair, a service learning project, offers clinical experience for the nursing students enrolled in the Community Health Nursing class this semester, under the clinical direction of registered nurse Karen Stringer, and registered nurse Peggy Rose, PNC assistant professor of Nursing and St. Anthony Memorial Hospital congregational nurse.

The R.O.C.K.Your Health! (Teens taking R esponsibility, having different O ptions, demonstrating C oncern, and K nowing their health) event will feature a variety of health and safety agencies and organizations from LaPorte, Porter and St. Joseph counties who will share vital information with the high school students. The fair will be presented in a casual atmosphere and students will have the opportunity to browse exhibits, pick up information, ask questions and take part in learning activities.

LaPorte County Health Department offering information on immunizations

C.P.R. = Creating Positive Relationships: abstinence education presented by registered nurse Doria LeMay

St. Joseph County Health Department distributing information on sexually transmitted diseases and HIV

American Red Cross presenting first aid safety information

American Cancer Society with smoking cessation resources, breast cancer and testicular cancer awareness

Catholic Family Service with information on suicide prevention and counseling services

Jazzecise Center on Franklin in Michigan City offering an exercise demonstration

Indiana State Police with drunken driving simulation goggles so that students can experience the peril of impaired driving

The lunch speaker will be Detective Robert Taylor of the Porter County Drug Task Force.
