PNC Students Earn Chancellor's Leadership Awards

WESTVILLE – Purdue University North Central Chancellor Dr. James B. Dworkin has announced the winners of the 2010-2011 Chancellor's Leadership Award.

The students selected for the honor join a distinguished group of students who have a record of academic achievement and demonstrated leadership through involvement in school and community activities.

PNC Chancellor James Dworkin stated, “I am pleased that we can offer students this opportunity to enhance their leadership qualities. This effort will transfer into our local communities as our students graduate and assume leadership positions in their chosen fields of work.”

Award criteria include school and community involvement and leadership, scholastic achievement and potential for participation and leadership in PNC extracurricular activities. Students earning leadership awards represent high schools throughout Northwest Indiana and were involved in a variety of clubs, activities, community and church organizations and sports.

The Chancellor's Leadership Award is a renewable scholarship program that requires participation in an on-campus leadership seminar and volunteer service, among other requirements. Several of the scholarships are sponsored through endowment funds created by local businesses and individuals.

Students earning the awards are:

Kirsten Babcock – A current PNC student, Babcock is a sophomore majoring in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Biology. At PNC, Kirsten has been a Student Government representative. In high school, she was involved in several clubs and theatre production.

Vesna Bukur – A current PNC sophomore majoring in Liberal Studies, Bukur intends to go to law school. A 13-year member of the Girl Scouts, she has many overseas experiences to share. At PNC, she has been involved in the cheerleading squad.

Jessica Coffer – Coffer is a 2010 Kankakee Valley High School graduate who is planning to major in Education. She was involved in Student Council and served as a class officer. She enjoys running and was team captain for both cross country and track.

Katheryn Hines – A 2010 Washington Township High School graduate, Hines plans to major in Elementary Education. She was involved in Key Club, was a class officer and belonged to Student Council. She was the captain of the volleyball team and Poms. Outside of class, she was involved in Girl Scouts and Key Club.

Justin Knoll – He is a 2010 La Lumiere High School graduate planning to major in Biology with a concentration in pre-veterinary medicine. He was involved in a number of high school organizations. He also earned the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Rank and traveled on a Mission trip to Nicaragua.

Flavia Lee-Cheng – She is a current PNC junior majoring in Communication. At PNC, she's involved in Alpha Sigma Lambda, the Multicultural club and other clubs. In the community, she has been involved at the Portage YMCA, Senior Center, Chamber of Commerce and is a Chesterton Art Gallery yoga instructor. She's also traveled abroad.

Gregory Mohlke – Mohlke is a 2010 South Central High School graduate planning to major in Mechanical Engineering. He was a National Honor Society member and officer. He is also a member of the Cass-Clinton Volunteer Fire Department and involved in his community.

Kara Moon - A Morgan Township High School graduate of 2010, Moon plans to major in Elementary Education or Business. She was involved in high school activities including National Honor Society, band, Student Council, basketball and track. She was a People to People Student Ambassador and traveled to France, Italy and Greece.

Lanay Parks – She is a 2010 Wheeler High School graduate planning to major in Behavioral Science or Education. Parks was a three-sport athlete in softball, basketball and volleyball and was captain of her varsity softball team. She was involved in the Freshman Mentor Program and was selected to be a Natural Helper.

Erica Pauer – She is a Hebron High School 2010 graduate planning to major in Business. She served as Student Council vice-president, was a member of Art and Science Club, Academic Super Bowl and Prom Committee. She played soccer, softball and was captain for both sports.

Cortney Quier—Cortney is an Elkhart Memorial High School 2010 graduate planning to major in Nursing. Cortney was a National Honors Student and was involved in the Health Occupations Medical Assisting Program which helped prepare her to become a nurse. She was a varsity softball player and participated in Red Cross blood drives, Pennies for Patients, Adopt a Family and Toys for Tots.

Casimir Rosinski – A Morgan Township High School 2010 graduate, he plans to major in Biology with a concentration in Pre-Med. He was captain of his varsity baseball team and participated in basketball, volleyball, soccer, track and field. He served as a member of Student Council.

Samantha Sims – She is an Oregon-Davis High School 2010 graduate of 2010 planning to major in Business. She was captain of her varsity basketball team, vice-president of National Honor Society and president of the Pep Club. She also participated in 4-H and served as a leader for her Junior Achievement class.

Camillia Story – A Michigan City High School 2010 graduate, Story was a member of both College Bound and Success Through Education. She was a varsity softball player, a member of National Honor Society, the Junior Engineering Technical Society and Science Club academic team.

Janelle Taylor – As a 2010 LaPorte High School graduate planning to major in Elementary Education, she was a Cadet Teacher, tennis team co-captain and participated in Relay for Life, Walk-a-thon and Girls Reserved.

Rachael Vaught – She is a George Rogers Clark High School 2010 graduate planning to major in Nursing. She was elected as Student Government president, Student Council vice-president and president of Business Professionals of America. She participated in band, chorus and drama in performing arts and volunteered with Red Cross Blood drives.

Lauren Young – A 2010 Valparaiso High School graduate, she plans to major in Early Childhood Education. She was involved in high school activities that included Natural Helpers, the Cornerstone Youth Group, Girl Scouts and the Key and Peace Clubs. She was as a student advocate for administration and participated on the track team. She volunteered at the Spring Valley Shelter and Methodist Hospital Southlake.

Olga Pecanac – She is a PNC sophomore majoring in Business. Olga is a member of the PNC cheerleading squad. She was a high school cheerleader for two years and a pom pom squad member for two years and was a four-year member of the Westville soccer team and her senior year co-captain. She works at her family-owned restaurant, Olga's Place.

Kyle Plummer – A 2010 Michigan City High School graduate, he plans to major in Nursing. He was a four-year varsity swim team member and a state competitor on the 2010 Envirothon team. He was a nine-year member of Boy Scouts, earning First Class Scout and Order of the Arrow. He is a volunteer firefighter for Pine Township and Beverly Shores Fire Departments and a Washington Park lifeguard.
