Dr. Serwatka received her EdD in Business Education from Northern Illinois University with minors in Management Information Systems and Instructional Technology. She received an M.S. in Management and an A.S. and B.S. in Computer Technology from Purdue University Calumet. She is currently Professor of Management Information Systems at PNC. She has taught at Purdue for 25 years in the areas of Computer Technology and Management Information Systems, with specialties in networking and distance education. Prior to her employment at Purdue, Dr. Serwatka worked in the steel, oil refining and banking industries as a programmer, systems analyst and systems engineer.
Areas of Expertise
Dr. Serwatka has developed and taught distance education courses since 1996. She was the Distance Learning Coordinator for Purdue University Calumet and Director of Learning and Technology at Purdue North Central.
Dr. Serwatka has been actively involved in Project Merlot since its inception in 2000. She was the Editor for the Information Technology Editorial Board in Project Merlot. She has authored more than 50 articles and conference presentations on distance learning. Dr. Serwatka has Certificates in distance education from Indiana University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received the Certificate of Recognition for innovative Teaching in a Distance Education Program from the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System (IHETS) in May, 2002 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for 2003 presented by the Network Systems Professionals Association (NaSPA) in 2004. She was the Project Merlot Volunteer of the year in 2005 and was awarded the Distinguished Leadership Award by NaSPA in 2005. Dr. Serwatka is also the author of 2 textbooks; Business Data Communication, Introductory Concepts and Techniques (published by Cengage), and Management Information Systems (an online publication, published by Great River Technologies).
