PNC Competes in First-Ever Volleyball Match
September 2, 2006
By: Jim Clark

The PNC Volleyball program took its first step towards becoming an intercollegiate program by competing as a club team verses intercollegiate competition at the Concordia Invitational (MI) in Ann Arbor, MI this past weekend (September 1st and 2nd).

The Panthers will start this year as a club program before making the jump to a NAIA intercollegiate sport for the 2007-08 academic year, competing as an independent. In 2008-09 PNC will complete their transition by competing as a member of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The Panther volleyball club team, with no scholarships or recruited players, was competitive at the tournament against long established varsity teams.

In Friday's round-robin play PNC lost to eventual champion, Concordia (IL) 30-19, 30-10, 30-21. In their second match the inexperienced Panthers put up a great fight against a tall and strong Concordia (WI) team but fell 30-26, 30-18, 30-25. The Panthers also lost to the host Cardinals in four games 30-28, 29-31, 30-15, 30-25.

PNC opened Saturday against Concordia (WI), the team that blitzed through the field on day one of the tournament and lost 30-14,30-16, 30-15. However, In the third place match, PNC rebounded for a competitive match to Concordia (MI) before falling 30-24, 11-30, 30-28, 30-24.

Game two was a thing of beauty for PNC. With the Cardinals having a 2-1 lead, PNC exploded for 12-straight points and had a surprising 13-2 lead considering how equal the two squads were. The Cardinals pulled within eight at 15-7, but the Panthers put the game away with a seven-point surge to take a commanding 22-7 lead en route to the 30-11 win.

With the rookie PNC feeling good about their chances and Concordia reeling, game three couldn't have been more pivotal - and as time would tell - it was the most exciting of the four games. The Cardinals appeared to be on cruise control midway through the contest when they sat with a seemingly comfortable 19-11 margin.  PNC fought their way back several times, pulling within one at 27-26 and 29-28 but the Cardinals were able to pick up the final point to take a 2-1 lead after winning game three 30-28.

Trailing 19-14 in the fourth game, Concordia found another level and were able to generate an eight-point streak to wrestle control of the game and match away from the Panthers and finish third overall in the tournament.

Freshman Angela Edwards (Kouts, IN) was the lone Panther to earn All-Tournament honors for PNC. PNC stat leaders for the tournament were: Edwards with 120 assists and 96% setting efficiency. Sam Svetic (Michigan City) had 60 kills while Ashley Morford (Michigan City, IN) and Sunshine Johns (Michigan City, IN) had 25 kills each. Dana Barkas (Valparaiso, IN) had 85 digs and 8 aces while Daisy Lee (Grays Lake, IL) added 8 aces.

Other Panther volleyball players competing in the first-ever club match for PNC included Melissa McCaughey (Westville, IN), Amanda Martin (Westville, IN), Cassie Yaros (Wheatfield, IN), and Felecia Fisher (Chesterton, IN).

The Panthers will play Prairie State Community College on September 5th at 6 p.m. in Chicago Heights, IL.
