2007-08 Basketball Preview; Panthers On Prowl
October 31, 2007
By: Kris Schnatz and John Weber |
The Purdue North Central basketball team is under new leadership for the 2007-08 season. However, the Panthers look to continue their recent succees.
Kristofer Schnatz, a Panther assistant for the past four seasons, begins his reign as head coach for the PNC Basketball Program.
Schnatz was part of the staff that culminated a steady climb as PNC won just three games in 2002-2003 when Grayling Gordon took over the struggling program. But Gordon, Schnatz and assistant David Garrett, rebuilt the Panther program and led them to their best season in school history last season, recording their first winning record at 15-14. The Panthers also finished second in the difficult Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference at 6-4 and made it to the second round of the CCAC Tournament.
Gordon landed the head job at Purdue Calumet, where he previously served as an assistant and Garrett joined him.
Schnatz will be joined by Thomas Karampetsios in his first year as an assistant for PNC, bringing basketball experience and knowledge overseas from his home in Athens, Greece . Karampetsios has experience playing at the European Professional level and coaching at the European High School and National levels.
"We are pleased that Kristofer was able to assume the head coaching responsibilities. He is familiar with our program, our University and our student-athletes," said PNC Athletic Director John Weber.
"Our program has advanced significantly through the years and we anticipate that Kris will continue this trend."
Coach Schnatz takes over a veteran team which includes '06-'07 First Team All-Conference athletes Adam Dobrzeniecki (Dyer, IN) and Terry Polk (Gary, IN).
Dobrzeniecki led all Panthers last year averaging 19 points and 7 rebounds per game. Polk averaged 11 points and 5 rebounds per game while grabbing 43 steals along the way.
Schnatz will enter his first year relying on senior leadership and experience from Sylvester James (Dolton, IL, 4.1 ppg), Brian Bogus (Knoxville, TN, 3.6 ppg) and Tyler Moore (Knox, IN, 2.8 ppg) to help lead the '07-'08 Panthers to their first consecutive winning seasons in school history.
Juniors Marlon Douglass ( Muncie , IN , 7.4 ppg, 55 assists), Hugh Howard ( Columbia City , IN , 2.4 ppg) and Avance Byrd ( Tacoma , WA ) along with new comers Anthony Jones ( Westville , IN ), Brandon Snell ( Indianapolis , IN ) and Richard Cernauskas ( Valparaiso , IN ) join the effort to improve on last year's success.
"We have a veteran group who understands how to win games. This group understands the effort that is required in order to find success both on and off the court. I am looking forward to helping this senior class close out their college basketball careers with another successful season," said Schnatz.
PNC tips-off their season November 2nd verses Mount Mercy College at 7 p.m. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa . The Panthers return to the area and meet Indiana University Northwest on Monday November 5th in Gary, IN before opening at home on Saturday November 10th verses Indiana University Southeast at 3 p.m. in Michigan City, IN.
