Baseball Season Comes to an End in Azusa, CA
May 13, 2009
By: Jamie Gutowski |
The Panther Baseball team played their second game in the Azusa Pacific (CA) NAIA Tournament Regional on Wednesday against the #3 seed Biola (CA). PNC got on the scoreboard first, but Biola got on the scoreboard most as the Panthers lost 16-2 in 7 innings. The loss marks the end of the season for PNC, who finished off the year 31-24 and boasted a second place CCAC finish. Biola improved to 35-23 and will play later in the day against Azusa Pacific in another elimination game.
Senior shortstop Jon Selman put PNC on the board first with a solo home run to right center field in the top half of the first inning. That would be the Panthers' only lead of the game, as Biola responded with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the first. The Eagles would score in ever inning for the rest of the game, while the Panthers only managed one more run in the second.
PNC had an opportunity to close the gap in the third inning, trailing 6-2. The Panthers had bases loaded with one out but failed to score as Biola pitcher Mike Frisina closed the door on the rally. PNC starter Kevin Scott was tagged early in the game as he went one inning and gave up 6 hits and 5 runs. Senior Casey Young was also hit hard, pitching two innings and giving up six runs on 5 hits.
Offensively the Panthers got two hits each from Junior Greg Feltner and Sophomore Nate Hall. Feltner drove in the other run for PNC.
The Panthers will look to build off this year's NAIA Tournament run as they return 24 players next year. However, the Panthers will have to do it without the help of talented Senior starters Chris Schultz, Jon Selman, Dave Dickerson and Chris Cappello. They also graduate pitchers Casey Young, Jon Charlson, Ryan Curless, Dan McCauley and Andrew Dahman.

Baseball Clinches NAIA Tournament Bid
May 6, 2009
By: John Weber |
The Purdue North Central baseball team clinched an NAIA National Tournament bid with a doubleheader split verses Olivet Nazarene Wednesday afternoon in Westville. The Panthers are now 31-21 overall and more importantly, 21-8 in the CCAC while the Tigers moved to 27-18 and 16-13.
The top two programs from the large, 11 team conference advance to the postseason. With two wins today St. Xavier clinched first place with a 24-5 CCAC mark (38-13 overall). With one conference game remaining for all teams, the Panthers have an insurmountable lead over the two teams trying to catch them for second place. Both the University of St. Francis and Judson University stand at 19-10 in the CCAC.
PNC will find out Friday where they will be sent to start opening round play in the National Tournament. For more information on opening round host sites go here: http://naia.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/042309aad.html .
In today's action the Panthers won the first game 4-3 behind the duo of junior Kevin Scott and freshman Tony Hoolehan. Scott (7-2) set the single season program record with his seventh win of the year. Hoolehan came on and recorded the final seven out for his second save of the year.
Scott allowed three runs on seven hits with one strikeout in 4.2 innings. Hoolehan walked two and added a strikeout in 2.1 hitless innings.
Olivet scored two runs in the second inning and a single run in the fifth while PNC scored one run in the first and three in the third.
PNC managed eight hits and were led by senior John Selman (2 hits, 2B, 2 runs), senior Chris Schultz (2 hits, 2B, RBI) and freshman Shane Breitzke (2 hits, 2B, RBI). Junior Adam Kennedy added a double and junior Greg Feltner drove in a run.
Sophomore Adam Hines (2 hits, HR, 2 runs, 2 RBI), junior Pete Smidt (2 hits) and senior Jeff Alexander (2B, RBI) led the Tigers. Freshman Casey Mast fell to 7-2 in the complete game effort. He allowed four runs (one earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out three.
In the second game the Panthers were stymied by Olivet Nazarene senior right-hander Ryan Forneris. Forneris gave up three runs in 5.2 innings on five hits and three walks while striking out six. Freshman Brandon Streets came on and retired the final four outs for the Tigers, including two punch outs.
Freshman R.J. Legel fell to 4-3 for the Panthers, giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks in 3.1 innings. Feltner led PNC with two hits, including a double and an RBI. Breitzke added a two-run double and sophomore Nate Hall reached twice on a hit and a walk.
Olivet Nazarene collected 14 hits overall and were led by junior Caleb King (2B, SB, BB, HBP) with three hits, three runs and two RBI. Alexander added a two-run homer whiles Smidt (2B), senior Paul Bergan (2 hits, RBI, BB), freshman Elijah Smurthwaite (2 RBI), and sophomore Kyle Cabral (3 hits, 2B, 2 SB) all had good days.
The Tigers scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third, three in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh. PNC scored all of their runs in the sixth inning.
Although the Panthers have qualified for the post-season the last four seasons via the CCAC Tournament, this is just the third time they have reached the NAIA National Tournament (2004, 2006, 2009). This year, with the expansion to a 30 game CCAC schedule from 20 games with the implementation of three games series, the CCAC Tournament was eliminated.
The 31 wins is the second most in program history (32 in 2006) with the final regular season game to be played tomorrow. The Panthers will take on Olivet Nazarene once again at 3 p.m. in Bourbonnais, IL.

Panther Baseball Scorched by UIC Flames
May 4, 2009
By: Jamie Gutowski |
The Purdue North Central baseball team beefed up its non-conference schedule by playing at Division I University of Illinois Chicago on Monday night. However, the only thing the Panthers were able to enjoy was the view of the skyline from the field, as the host Flames posted a 16-3 victory. The loss moved PNC to 30-20 on the year as UIC improved to 21-20.
The Panthers jumped out to a quick lead as Senior Dave Dickerson double to left center and advanced to third on a Chris Schultz single. Freshman Jeff Strbjak collected an RBI on a fielder's choice. A Nate Hall single with two outs would score Schultz and give PNC a 2-0 lead. The Purdue North Central baseball team split a doubleheader with Robert Morris College Saturday afternoon in Bensenville, IL, winning the first game 4-3 and dropping the second game 8-7. The Panthers are now 23-15 overall and 15-3 in the CCAC while the Eagles moved to 28-11 and 10-8.

Baseball Hammered in California
Feb. 1, 2009
By: John Weber |
The Purdue North Central baseball team traveled to Riverside, CA to take on California Baptist in a four game series to open the season. The Panthers were destroyed by the Lancers in all four games but gained some much needed practice and game experience outside.
Game 1
In the first game the Panthers fell 29-2 as they struck out 11 times and managed just three hits. California Baptist University used an offensive explosion, scoring in every inning, in the season-opener for both teams.
The Lancers had 10 stolen bases, 31 hits and scored four or more runs in four different innings in tying the program record for runs in a single-game and winning their fourth straight season-opener. It was 15-0 after four innings before the Panthers were forced to go to mop-up pitching.
The Lancers erupted for six runs on just two hits in the first inning. They parlayed eight stolen bases, a pair of errors, three walks, a pair of wild pitches, a pair of RBI-singles and a hit batter into a 6-0 lead.
The Lancers retired the first 13 batters before giving up back-to-back one-out walks in the fifth. With two outs in the fifth, senior Chris Cappello laced an RBI for the Panthers first hit of the season. Cappello had two of PNC's three hits overall with senior Chris Schultz picking up the other. Freshman Jeff Strjbak picked up the other RBI on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch in the ninth inning.
The Lancers' 1-5 hitters combined to go 14-for-22, scoring 15 runs and driving in 17 runs. In fact, every Lancer starter had at least one hit, and eight of them had two hits or more.
Senior Ryan Curless took the loss for the Panthers giving up six runs (three earned) on two hits, three walks and a hit batter. He struck out one and threw two wild pitches.
Freshman Kyle Ferber made his first collegiate appearance and gave up nine runs (six earned) on11 hits while striking out two in three innings. Junior Mark Myszkowski also made his first collegiate pitching appearance and gave up eight earned runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out one. Finally, junior Greg Feltner made his first pitching appearance for PNC, allowing six earned runs while striking out three in three innings of work.
Game 2
In the second game California Baptist won 16-0 as their pitchers dominated again, striking out seven and allowing just four hits. The win is the Lancers' second straight to start the season as they improve to 2-0. The Panthers fall to 0-2.
In the two games thus far, CBU has combined for 45 runs and 50 hits, while limiting the Panthers to just six hits and two runs.
After being blanked in the first inning the Lancers began to methodically pull away. They led 4-0 after three innings, 5-0 after four and then used a four-run fifth to open a 9-0 advantage. CBU tacked on a seven run seventh for the final margin.
Junior Kevin Scott was saddled with the loss after giving up five runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out one in four innings. Freshman Shane Prance followed with two innings of work, allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk while punching out two. Senior Dan McCauley made his first pitching appearance in three years and gave up four runs, four hits and a walk while striking out one in one inning. Freshman Matt Imhausen tossed a scoreless eighth in his first collegiate appearance allowing just one walk.
Junior Sean Baker picked up his first hits as a Panther with two singles while Schultz added two more knocks. Freshman Brian Altgilbers gunned down three would-be base stealers in his first collegiate start.
Games 3 and 4
On Saturday California Baptist University put the finishing touches on an impressive offensive display that led to a four-game sweep of Purdue-North Central, combining for 28 hits and 29 runs in a doubleheader sweep.
The Lancers won the opener, 11-1, and completed the sweep with an 18-3 win in the nightcap.
The victories make the Lancers' 4-0 on the season and have now won 26 of the past 31 at Totman Stadium. The Panthers fell to 0-4.
In the opener the Panthers increased their hit total to six but struck out 11 more times in falling 11-1. PNC picked up three first-inning hits and took their first and only lead of the series, 1-0. However, the Lancers responded with a four-run second and a three-run third to take control.
Sophomore John Bugajski led the Panthers with two hits while Baker, Schultz, Feltner and sophomore Nate Hall added one apiece. Feltner had the lone RBI.
Senior Casey Young took the loss allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits while walking two and throwing three wild pitches in 2.2 innings. Senior Jon Charlson gave up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one in 1.1 innings. Imhausen came on and threw his second scoreless inning while giving up two hits.
In the nightcap, the Lancers continued their offensive onslaught, using an eight-run second to open a 10-0 advantage. The Lancers resumed their aggressive base-running, stealing six bases in the nightcap.
Freshman Tony Hoolehan made his first collegiate start, lasting one inning. He gave up seven runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks. Freshman R.J. Legal also made his first collegiate appearance and gave up seven runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks while punching out four in three innings. Feltner and junior Mike Zolper (RBI) pounded out two hits apiece while senior Dave Dickerson added a single and picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Sophomore R.J. Zambrano added a single and Strjbak added an RBI walk. Feltner would have had a third hit but he missed first base on a sure double. In the four-game series, the Lancers out-scored the Panthers, 74-6, and had 78 hits, 22 doubles and 16 stolen bases. PNC managed 19 singles and one stolen base.
The Panthers will be back in the gym for another month before flying to Florida on March 6th to play 11 games in the Tampa/Clearwater area.

Baseball Season Preview 2009
Jan. 27, 2009
By: John Weber |
The Purdue North Central baseball team is looking forward to an exciting 2009 season. With a challenging schedule, including trips to California and Florida the Panthers hope to blend a mix of veterans and talented newcomers into a formidable team.
The Panthers open their season with a four game series versus nationally ranked California Baptist University on Jan. 29 th in Riverside, CA. PNC hopes to use this opportunity to get away from the cold, snow and gymnasium to measure their development on a real field.
When they return the Panthers will be back in the gym for a month before playing 11 games in Clearwater, Florida on their annual spring break trip. PNC, picked to finish 3 rd of 11 teams in the CCAC, opens conference play on March 20 th . The University of St. Francis (ranked 13 th ) and St. Xavier (ranked 33 rd ) are projected to finish first and second.
The Panthers recently completed the best three year stretch in program history from 2006-2008 finishing 32-20, 28-21 and 28-22. During this time PNC increased their win total in the difficult Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference from 11-9, to 13-8 to last year's 14-6, the most wins in CCAC history.
In fact, the Panthers are the number one NAIA baseball program (11 programs) by winning percentage in the state of Indiana the last three years and 8 th overall of 32 programs in the state at any level.
This year PNC will look to several returning veterans to lead the way. The Panthers return seven starters in the field but will have many spots to fill on the mound.
In the outfield the Panthers return two starters in senior rightfielder Dave Dickerson and junior leftfielder Mike Zolper. Dickerson, a three-year starter, batted .341 with 4 homeruns, 8 2B's, 3 3B's and 33 RBI while adding 10 stolen bases. Zolper hit .326 with 1 HR, 4 2B's and 11 stolen bases while knocking in 15 runs.
Taking over in centerfield will be senior Chris Schultz. Schultz was an All-Region performer last year at first base, batting .445 with 8 HR, 10 2B's, 5 3B's and 48 RBI, despite missing eight games.
The competition in the outfield is strong with returners Mark Myszkowski (jr.) and John Bugajski (so.) expected to make major contributions and push for starting time. Myszkowski made significant contributions last season in a utility role and batted .296 in 63 plate appearances with 13 RBI while playing all the outfield spots, second base and catching. Bugajski had a strong contribution as a freshman, batting .278 (10 for 36) with 8 RBI and 6 SB's.
In the infield the Panthers will return everyone from last year but have to replace Schultz who transitioned to the outfield. With several solid newcomers the Panthers expect competition and a deep infield.
Leading the way will be senior shortstop John Selman, who won the CCAC gold glove award for his steady play. Selman also batted .320 with 3 HR's, 9 2B's, 24 RBI and added 17 BB's. Sophomore Nate Hall expects to see a lot of time as well with both players being very versatile. Hall had just started playing on a consistent basis last season before hurting his ankle. He still managed a .256 average in 45 plate appearances and has the ability to make a spectacular play at anytime.
Sophomore R.J Zambrano returns at third base but is competing with freshman Jeff Strbjak for the starting job. Zambrano batted .317 in his rookie season with 20 RBI and 11 stolen bases. Strbjak brings a big bat to the line-up and comes from one of the top high school programs in the state in Andrean HS.
Senior Chris Cappello returns at second but is competing with junior Sean Baker who sat out last season. Cappello brings a steady glove and an improved bat to the lineup, batting .266 with 14 RBI after earning a starting role last season. Baker is versatile and can play anywhere for PNC and looks to contribute a solid bat.
First base is expected to be manned by junior college transfer Greg Feltner who will step into the middle of the order with a capable left-handed stick. Feltner transferred in from Danville Area CC and had a strong season last year despite recovering from a shoulder problem.
With four strong catchers, catching appears to be a position of solid depth for PNC. Returning junior Adam Kennedy handled the bulk of the catching last year and batted .267 with 9 2B's, 1 HR and 17 RBI while adding 16 BB's. He is expected to be pushed by freshmen Brian Altgilbers and Jeff Gaston. Both are sound receivers while Gaston appears to have an edge with the bat. Baker is also a proven catcher and can fill in at anytime if necessary.
Other positional players fighting for time include junior Jay McCauley and freshmen Jerry Vasile, Shane Breitzke and Kevin Zolper. McCauley has had limited experience in his first two years while the freshmen are looking to contribute when given the opportunity.
On the mound the Panthers will rely on a motley mix of seniors and freshmen with only two juniors and no sophomores.
Seniors Ryan Curless and Casey Young look to lead the staff after making major contributions as juniors. Curless finished 2-4 with a 6.31 ERA in 41.1 innings pitched while striking out 37. Opponents batted just .273 verses him as he faced some of the teams' strongest opponents.
Young finished 3-3 with a 4.12 ERA in 43.2 innings. Opponents batted just .277 against him as he struck out 19 and threw two shutouts.
Senior Andrew Dahman looks to return to form from his sophomore year when he finished 4-1 with a 2.79 ERA in 39.1 innings. Last season he finished 2-1 with a 6.21 ERA in 29 innings.
Senior Jon Charlson and Dan McCauley look to lead the way out of the bullpen. Charlson will expand on his leading role out of the bullpen after making 13 appearances last season and finishing 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA. McCauley is returning from injury and looks to make an impact in his final season.
Finally, Schultz will be a two way player and make contributions on the mound when not manning the outfield. Last season he was 4-1 with a 3.86 ERA in limited action. In 25.2 innings pitched he struck out 27 while walking 13.
Kevin Scott is the lone junior returning with experience and finished 3-2 with a 4.95 ERA last year. The big righty struck out 7 and walked 4 in 36.1 innings of work. Jesse Cartagena is the other junior returning and had limited action in his first two seasons.
The talented freshmen class will have to make an immediate impact in order for PNC to have a successful season. The class is led by Tony Hoolehan and R.J. Legel. Hoolehan is another member from the strong Andrean program and Legel played for coach Tony Harris at Hammond Gavit HS.
Three other freshmen are expected to make major contributions as well. Shane Prance from Portage HS, Kyle Ferber from Boone Grove HS, and Matt Immhausen, also from Andrean. Prance and Ferber are expected to make appearances as spot starters and in relief while Immhausen will be used strictly out of the bullpen.
Freshmen Tyler Nader and Evan Walter are expected to make contributions, as are two-way players Myszkowski and Feltner.
The Panthers must overcome the loss of several players who led the program's turnaround and became the first to finish four seasons with a winning record.
The Panthers lost seven student-athletes to graduation, including positional players Jake Pierce, Chris Stocker and Nestor Allende and pitchers Scott Marks, Brian Phillips, John Lackinger and Tom Albano.
Pierce kick-started the Panthers from the lead-off spot batting .348, (55 of 158) with 22 RBI, 7 2B's and 19 SB's while playing a stellar centerfield. Stocker concluded a standout career batting .331 with 4 HR, 41 RBI, and 13 2B's from the clean-up spot. Allende struggled after a thumb injury and saw limited action before heading off to law school.
On the bump the Panthers will have to overcome major losses including PNC's all-time wins and saves leader Albano. Albano finished 3-3 with 9 saves and a 3.81 ERA while punching out 49 in 54.1 innings. Phillips led the team in innings pitched the last two seasons and finished 6-4 with a 4.15 ERA in 69.1 innings. Lackinger had a solid year out of the pen with a 1.98 ERA in seven appearances while Marks finished 2-2 with a 5.95 ERA in 19.2 innings.
The Panthers will once again be coached by John Weber who is entering his fifth season for PNC. After inheriting the program with just 16 eligible players in October 2004 he has led the program to new heights.
Weber will be assisted by second year coaches Steve Plucinski and Dan Martin and first year coach Mitch Heinemeyer. Plucinski will oversee the pitchers and coach first base while Martin and Heinemeyer will oversee the hitters.
