Assessment to Improve Student Learning

While there are many definitions of assessment within higher education, Purdue North Central places the focus on assessment for improvement of students' learning.  PNC actively uses assessment results to enhance the overall quality of a students’ experience.

"To assess" derives from the Latin verb "assidere", to sit by.  In other words, while we assess learning we are in essence “sitting with the learner”.  This has broad implications when we consider assessment as part of good teaching practices and something that we do for our students rather than to them.

Assessment is more formally defined as a process of "gathering and discussing information from multiple and diverse sources in order to develop a deep understanding of what students know, understand, and can do with their knowledge as a result of their educational experiences; the process culminates when assessment results are used to improve subsequent learning." (Huba, M. E. and Freed, J. E. (2000).  Learner-Centered Assessment on College Campuses -- Shifting the Focus from Teaching to Learning. Boston, Allyn and Bacon.

This website is designed to keep you informed and help you in your efforts to improve assessment in your courses/programs/departments.  Purdue North Central has been actively growing in course, program, and institutional assessment efforts.  The Assessment Steering Committee of the Faculty Senate has developed a recent model for program assessment.  The hiring of the Director of Accreditation and Assessment, Dr. Linda Duttlinger, has been a great step in preparing for the upcoming HLC visit in 2010-2011.  Check out the Accreditation website for more information.
