The Witches

Something wicked this way comes . . .

The witches are one of the most beloved sets of characters in the Shakespeare canon, but not because they are very friendly.  Just who they are and where they have come from is never clear, but their equivocating, riddling answers to Macbeth's questions are perfectly tuned to lead him into the darkest recesses of his own desires, and carry him toward the direst kind of cruelty.
