Meeting Minutes 2007-2008

Sept. 10th   meeting brought to order at 11:00a.m.

• The website is currently under construction and we hope to have it operational soon.
• The officers for 2007-2008 are: Amanda Sobieck, Pres.; Ann Pool, V. Pres.; Ann Gielczyk, Treasurer; Lane Theriac, Sec.
• Amanda made a general introduction for the "National Assoc. of Student Nurses". There are flyers on the STAND board on the third floor. Membership is annually $30. This organization has many benefits for students including lots of discounts on texts, NCLEX review discounts, conferences to attend, and an excellent source of networking.
• There will soon be t-shirts available with the STAND and PNC nursing logos available. A link is available on the website to download a form. If you have questions about your order please contact Ann Gielczyk. We plan to order stock within a couple weeks.
• This is essentially a year for our local STAND chapter to re-group and decide what the members and nursing students want from this organization. What do you as students want to see from this opportunity? How can STAND make your time here more fulfilling? What would you like to produce as a member of STAND? The past focus has been on fund raising but there has not been a focus on how to utilize the funds raised. A point was raised that perhaps equipment for the NRL would be a good goal. Even though we have used funds in the past to help with coat drives, or Holiday programs maybe it would be better not to duplicate programs already being done by other organizations on campus. The arguement was that equipment we use would ultimately benefit the community by producing better nurses. Amana S. has a meeting tomorrow with all the group presidents and the organization advisor to go over rules and regulations. After that we may have a better focus on what is possible. Amanda will also meet with nursing faculity to explore the possibilities of a "wish list" and then we could research costs.
• A Student Night Out for Nursing Students was discussed by the president. This would be a get-together for nursing and pre-nursing students to meet, network, eat pizza, and get to know each other. There seemed to be interest in this and the STAND officers will proceed with planning.
• Do we want/need a mentoring program? First year nursing students that attended the meeting were very interested. Any student that wanted to be mentored was asked to e-mail Amanda Sobieck. If you wish to be a mentor, also send Amanda an e-mail and she will pair folks as possible. She currently mentors two students and it has been a great help to her and the students.
